Apollo '040 MMU/FPU 40MHz A1200 accel good buy?

Since Eyetech isn't writing me back I'll ask here:

Is the Apollo 040 40Mhz for the 1200 worth the cash, or is it slightly problematic?

Depend on how much cash you're talking about. I wouldn't pay much for them since: they don't run reliable in all A1200, the 040 runs extremly hot and isn't suitable for sitting in a A1200 desctop, it only offers 32mb mem uppgrade as stock, and last though not specific for the card... 040 is the CPU that offers least compability with "older" software.

ive seen 040's go for peanuts on ebay, rightfully people dont want them!

look for a 030 that isnt appollo

yeah or get a phase5 blizzard1260 which is the best 68k accelerator for the A1200.. it probably won't be cheap on ebay though..

At which point the Coldfire might be the better option. Hmm, gonna have to find a non Apollo 030 40Mhz or better, non-Apollo.

How much might that cost?

i had apollo 040/40. my friend soldered me a second simm socket and i had 64 megs fast then. the cpu didn`t overheat. once i forgot the fan, it worked for 3 hours. i had no problems with this card. and the last: 040/40 is much faster than 040/25, not talking about 030s...

It's probably the fastest 040 card for the A1200 and a good choice *unless* you want SCSI, which was badly implemented (PIO, basically).

Of course a 50MHz 68060 wil typically eat it for breakfast.

As I said.. as stock it only offers 32Mb mem upgrade. And not one thing anyone says can convince me that a 040 is suited for an A1200 desctop, it's not a question of if it works but for how long.

There's simply not enough room in the A1200 desctop to offer enough airflow for me to recommend it to anyone and I'll quote myself here and repeat: "Commodore didn't release the A3000 with a 040 since they found the airfrlow in the A3000 to be insufficient to cool their 040/25 card even with it's massive heatsink... try to pick up some common sence from that."
