USB Camera on Amiga?
« on: March 12, 2003, 01:06:43 AM »
Has anyone used a USB camera on an Amiga? How do you get the Amiga to read the camera? Does it appear as a DOS disk? Do you need a Mountlist entry for it? What?

Easy you need a USB board for your amiga and the POSIDEON USB stack for your Amiga

I have a SPIDER USB 2.0 card from Elbox
all I do is plug my Sony camcorder into the USB port and it apears on my desktop just like a floppy or a CDROM I can copy, format, make drawers rename, and transfer files just like you do everything else on the Amiga. I also purchased a PNY Seven in One USB 2.0 media reader I plug in a smart media, flash, memorystick, they apear on my desktop and I can tranfer files back and forth,
even between the different media faster than most hard drives.
play back my MPEG's using Frogger use multiview to display the JPG's. Posideon also includes drivers for a Aptec's  Three in one Pen Camera if you have VHI you can use your USB camera as a Web Camera.

Posideon can be purchased from IOSPIRIT http://www.iospirit.de/ for About $20.00 American. Cost on Amiga USB cards depends on your Amiga setup. but they all use the Posideon Software some cards come with a licensed version included others just supply the drivers and you have to purchase Posideon on your own.

I havn't tried to use a USB mouse or Keyboard since my mouse and keyboard adapters are outstanding. My scanners are SCSI and my printers use Par. ports so there I Haven't tried to use a USB version of them. But they are supported.

There is also a Posideon list on egroups

Thanks, Kurt, I already have a Thylacine card in my 4000. When I connect the camera, the USB recognises the camera, but it doesn't appear on the Workbench, so I thought maybe it needs a DOSdriver mountlist entry (like a CD) before it will appear. Is your camera a DOS device? How is it structured? Mine looks like a FAT disk on a PC.

@tonyw

It might. If you haven't already, grab Fat95 off Aminet. Then make sure UMSD: has the correct unit settings (should be in storage/dosdrivers. If that's correct, try mounting it and see what you get.

There is an alpha/beta version hardware driver for the Thylacine for Poseidon (hey Kurt, check the spelling ;-) ). There are still some unresolved problems, but Robert Tsien will be very thankful for testers (so ask him about the driver). AFAIK there is no mass storage driver for the OS4 stack publically available yet, but I've read they're working on it.

tony's right you need the fat 95 filesystem installed on your system first
http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/aminet/disk/misc/fat95.lha
after you install that make sure the example UMSD from the poseidon stack is in your storage/dosdrivers directory. Don't try to mount it!!

In trident make sure that the Masstorage device setting Fat file system points to the fat95 filesystem you just installed (L:fat95)

Sorry for all speeling mistakes and other giberish its 3:45 AM  I have to get up at 6:30 for work. Too little sleep is making me abit loopy  so goodnight all.

Kurt

My Sony,Olympus,Sharp cameras use Fat95 and work fine when connected to my Amiga. The PNY reader works great in USB 1.1 mode and sometimes needs to be unpluged and repluged for USB 2.0 mode ( Works the same in my PC and Amiga except in my Amiga when it goes nuts my Amiga does not see it in my PC it tries to format installed media )but the Sandisk smartmedia reader does not work on my Amiga it needs special drivers.

***** Edit: Ignore all this rubbish below ******

I don't have the Poseidon stack AFAIK. Maybe I'm iggorant of these distros, but I thought the Poseidon stack was not used with the Thylacine, only with the Spider.

I can't find "UMSD#?" on my system disc or the 3.9 distro disc. It didn't come with the Thylacine hardware or drivers, so is it part of the Spider package?

WTF is Trident?? Part of Poseidon?

I don't use fat95 (although I did with Amithlon a year ago) - I use CrossDos.

Maybe I'm missing stuff from my 3.9 distro - it's 3.9 from the Amithlon disc. Since I'm not using Amithlon or AmigaXL, I'm using the included 3.9 on my 4000.

I think we're talking about different animals here. You are talking about Highway/Subway, I'm talking about Thylacine. I don't know if there's any software in common.

Chris? Maybe you can educate me. Are you saying that the Poseidon software will run the Thylacine? Or that some of it already does?

tony

******** Edit: new post starts here **********

OK, after some Googling, I've found out that I could run the Poseidon drivers on my Thylacine card. Is this correct? It won't erase my hard disc? :nervous:

If I did install the Poseidon system, I would then get access to other peripherals that are not yet supported by the Thylacine software? True or false?

Poseidon is not bound to a special hardware. As long as there is a lowlevel hardware driver for it, Poseidon supports it. There are working drivers for Highway, Subway, Pegasos, XXX (top secret ;) ) and Spider. The Thylacine driver still has some problems, concerning mass storage devices, but otherwise seems to work fine. The problem is that most Thylacine users don't give enough detailed feedback for Robert to fix it.

Trident is the graphical user interface and prefs program for Poseidon. CrossDOS does also work with Poseidon's mass storage class for automounting, but I really encourage to use fat95 (the UMSD mountlist is part of the Poseidon package).

As I said, I don't think Sirion (the included software for the Thylacine) currently has mass storage support (at least, not publically available -- I'm not saying that there isn't such a working driver in beta stage). Poseidon on the other hand, doesn't currently have a class driver for Ethernet cards as Sirion has.

You can download the demo version of Poseidon from Aminet. It can be installed at the same time as the Sirius USB Stack, but it cannot be /run/ at the same time. You will need to contact Robert to send you the latest HCD for Poseidon, as he had removed it from his website. The demo version is time restricted and will stop working after some (short) time.
