Phillips CM8833-II monitor sound-Help Please?

Hi all.I just bought a Phillips monitor that has model number-CM11342/25G on label to rear of monitor.But has CM8833-II printed inside front flap.It's a great condition monitor,but I cant seem to get sound from it,apart from when I plug headphones into side socket?Does this model have built in speakers or not?I am connecting it to my A1200 with 3 phono leads-composite video,left+right sound?Any answers please? :-?

I think that monitor is the same as the C= 1084S.  My first Amiga had a 1084S with it (whose didn't?) and the sound started cutting out after about 5 years.  We used to get the sound back by giving the side of the monitor a good whack, which probably is what contributed to the sound finally cutting out completely and permanently :-o.

Nowadays I'd suspect a broken solder joint inside and take a look at the connections for the speakers where they attach to the main board of the monitor...

Yes great thanks.I don't think I will whack it! Well not just yet anyhow,cos it's got a great picture+knowing my luck,I'd probrably lose that too-lol.But I will get its case aprt over weekend and have a closer look.Mind you,even without sound,it was a real bargain for 99 pence!! :-)

Hum,
i would stick in a set of PC speakers directly into the Amiga (or into the headphone socket of the monitor).
(mains powered of course)
And get a really decent sound - er, for my thumping techno...

Hi,yep,I thought bowt plugging some pc speakers in.Could I use some with mains adapter that plugs into end of kettle lead going into back of monitor,and if so,where would I plug the single phono plug-would that go into headphone jack on monitor? :-o

 I have the same monitor with the same problem, and i think i know what's wrong: The sound sockets of this monitor are too sensitive and after a few years of mechanical stress (pulling the leads in and out) their connection from the monitor's board gets loose.
 It's a good idea to open the monitor, turn it upside-down and see if this is the case. If yes, then it's very simple to fix it.

If he's able to get stereo sound out of the Headphone Jack then the Audio input connections are fine.

1) The speakers mute when the Headphone Jack is plugged in, maybe that is broken.

2) Perhaps the speakers have been overloaded and blown in the past.

Either way you're going to have to open it up to find out.

OR just plug PC speakers into the Headphone Jack on the monitor... a little ugly but hey!

Hmm... Had that monitor too, speakers work fine til this day . Bought it 13 years ago.
Why use the jack output on the monitor? The more crap between the audio outputs on the amiga and the speaker the more degraded audio quality.
Why not get a 2xRCA -> female 3.5mm stereojack y-adapter and hook up some pc speakers directly to the amiga.
Even better, hook up a real amplifier+speakers directly to the amiga. Then you wouldn't need that y-adapter only a ordinary 2xRCA->2xRCA audio cable.

Thanks all for your help.My monitor is a '93 model,pictures excellent+looks to have been generally well looked after,cos it's in great cosmetic nick,so I guess somethings come adrift or blown inside.I do have a amp with the required aux inputs+bowt 150 watt Missions for a good output,so I will probrably connect them up.But I will take a look inside monitor in next few days.Cheers. :-D

I also use a Philips CM8833-II, I did have that same problem myself, so I took the back off to find dry joints areound that area, I used a 25watt soldering iron and made good.  Not had a sound problem since.
As a matter of interest I did do the same to the one channel of my other monitor the Commodore 1083S.

Thanks.I tried to start taking monitor apart+not having taken one apart before,I was a bit concerned,I might do more damage than good,seeing the circuit board pulling out from front of monitor as I eased back off.Does back+ base panel come away without the need to dis-connect any wires?Only I chickened out+put it back together! :-?  :-?  :-D

If it's like my old 1084 (with the big square power button and flip down panel on the front) then the circuit board just floats in a channel moulded into the two halves of the case.  Just wiggle things a little bit (don't touch anything on the pcb to be safe!) and the back half of the case should come free.  The cable to the speakers as I remember is a little on the short side so you'll have to disconnect it to be able to lay the cover aside.

I think there is also a screw or two at the back of the cover, near the audio inputs, that needs to come out -- if you didn't take it out, it would want to pull the board out as you pull off the cover.
