E-Tech analog ADSL router&modem combo

Hello folks,

I've been doing some digging for my father who is about to get an ADSL connection over an analog phone line. He still needs a modem and the standard one the phone company provides is stupidly overpriced. So I figured I'd do some research to pick a nice one for him.

So far this one is my 1st choice. I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with this thingy. It's a rather cheapish router/modem combo, costing about 130EUR/USD.

Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

Beware, though when your ISP says "Oh, we don't support THAT brand of modem/box"  I'm on cable, but I hear it all the time.  "You mean you don't have windoze OR Mac?,  sorry"

Well, it is for my parents who would use it for 2 desktop peecee's and one laptop, all running some flavour of windoze.

And it should work with the phone company/isp, the producers homepage explicitly (sp?) states that it works.

I've been using an ADSL router that looks exactly like that one here in the UK, my ISP is Pipex. I bought it from dabs.com who sell it under their "value" line, at the time is was by far the cheapest combined router and modem. So far it has worked flawlessly the only negative point I can think of about it is that the plastic case is a bit cheap looking (and metalic blue ). I have a PC and various Amigas connected and they all work well. The setup is all by web pages served from the router which work well in Amiga browsers, even the firmware upgrade works from IBrowse should you need it.

As far as I can tell the router is actually made by a company called Amigo , firmware updates are available from their website.

Obviously I can't say if it will be compatible with your ISP but there are a wide range of options.

Thankyou that was just the kind of reply I was looking for :-). So E-Tech just imports them and rebadges it?

Are there any problems using software which uses weird portnumbers? (EG running gameservers, voice/videoconferencing/etc).

I can't say I've tried anything particularly esoteric. A friend of mine with the same router has tried on-line gaming (Quake 2) and that seems to work fine.

Because the router uses NAT as I understand it you have to set up a port mapping to run an Internet accessible server on one of the LAN machines. There is an option to do this in the router firmware and it allows you to map a single ports or ranges.

I read some reports that is was not able to map portranges, but only single ports. Good thing it does though =).

I think you may need to download the firmware update from Amigo to get the port ranges feature.
