IDE Expansion for the Amiga 1200
« on: May 19, 2005, 03:39:34 PM »
Just found this at the bottom of a box.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5199688346

I've just tested it and it works fine. Two end pins of the second channel are slightly bent (forgot to mention that in the listing) - though the connector fits fine so it's not a problem.

I'll supply two cables if needed (one is an extra-long home made cable). Maybe I should have mentioned that in the listing  too. A bit too much  :pint: last night

Cheers,

Andy.

You should also mention that the hardware is quite useless without the IDEfix software.

Thomas

"Quite Useless" is not strictly the case, but maybe I should have mentioned that you need IDEfix to enable the second channel. However, you can operate two HDD's on the first channel without IDEfix installed.

The listing has been updated to reflect the above.

You don't need Idefix for the 2nd channel if you have OS 3.5/3.9 installed

Works fine in my A1200 , Blizzard 1240 16MB, OS3.9 ,CDROM, 8GB HD (1st Channel) and DVD-ROM (2nd Channel)  :-P

Confirmed :-)

during some test yesterday, i've removed the IdeFix software and the passive 4Way adapter, still works with OS3.9 scsi.device. (even the 2nd channel)

EDIT- to be more precise . . . i have an only CDROM on the second channel me too.

I'm not 100% sure, if a HD would work on the second channel without IdeFix.

btw . . . those 4way adapter, ita a DCE CD ROM ADAPTER.

@Kinster: you don't need this interface to have two HDDs on the IDE bus.

@Animagic & Framiga: do you use scsi.device or atapi.device in your DosDriver ? Atapi.device is part of the IDEfix package. Did you delete atapi.device (and every other file that has atapi in its name from Devs:) and does the CD-ROM still work ? AFAIK scsi.device (the only part which comes with OS3.9) does *not* see the second channel unless it is patched by IDEfix.

Bye,
Thomas

Alright, i'm game.  I'm putting an A1200 in my shiny new shop as the office computer!  Would be nice to have a CD-ROM on it for easy file sharing with my main A1200.

I didn't say you did. However, you would need to make, or buy, a custom 2.5" to 3.5"x2 IDE cable which would probably cost more than this item will go for. This board offers a simpler solution, and it's going cheap :-)

All this talk of more than one drive on the a1200.  I have a question: anyone know if an ordinary 2.5" to 3.5" ide adaptor could be used to connect a two device 3.5" cable to the 2.5" m/b connector.  They are only a dollar or so (as compared to $40+ for the cheapest amiga ide variant.  Yes, yes, I know that the expansion would be unbuffered, but would it work (cheap)?

Yes, it would work.  Just don't plug in the included power connector.  IMHO, it's better to get a cable, rather than an adapter and a standard cable.

I got one of the below items for transfering data from my A1200 to my PC running WinUAE.  I use it oposite of how you want to though (so I use the power cable to power the 2.5" HD).

Link to adapter (not sure if this would feed correctly through the RF shield).  Again, you don't need to connect the power cable.

Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

@adolescent

yeah, that's what I had in mind.  The power plug bit maybe could be used to power a small internal fan off the 2.5" power connector.  My idea is simply to find a cheap interface to use a 3.5" ide drive and an internal 40-pin laptop ide cd rom (all in the original A1200 case).  Power to the drives would come off the floppy power connector.
