Nostalgia (New User)

Today - I am organised.  My wife is 8 monthes pregnant and is nesting so the house is immaculate.
I on the other hand was out in the garden on a fine summers day mowing the lawns and tidying the shed.  Deep beneath the piles of old toolboxes and decaying timber I found an old box - "Cartoon Classic" it had written on the box.
Now I was planning on selling alot of old Amiga games on ebay and out of curiosity I thought I would take out the Amiga A500plus that was inside the box.  The power supply was in good nick.  The A520 was in good nick AND had the little manual with it.  The Workbench disks were still in their un-opened plastic envelopes. Workbench, Extra's & Fonts.

Out of curiosity I thought I would connect it all together.  Never in a million years did I expect it to work but when I flipped the power switch it worked a treat.  The floppy drive was a little stiff but atleast it worked.

Workbench loaded fine once it had the keymaps from the Extra's disk and I was in heaven.  This was the first time I had booted a "real" Amiga in at least 6 years.  This had not been booted for a minimum of 10 years.  I was amazed.

Now.  The crunch came when my six year old son came home from school and saw this big bulky machine underneath the TV and wanted to have a go.  "It's better than my "Gameboy" [Advance].  I have spent the past two hours getting him away from the computer.  I have everything in my house, from Xboxes to Playstation II's all the way down to Spectrum' (which will be on ebay this week hopefully) and I think he has just discovered the Amiga.

This is why I have posted this mail on the new user forum.

Hehe, sorta reminds me of my youngest bro. He was just 3 years old when he learned to switch on the A500 and boot a game. He was not 5 years old when I moved out of home with the A500 and upgraded to the A1200 I still have now. He's now 15 going on 16 and just bought himself a new-fangled P4 PC (I took the usual two or three "support calls", as he had some weird compatibility with the PSU and motherboard he bought). Anyway, he doesn't remember the Amiga much cause he was too young. I'm making it a goal to acquire another A1200 to load up with a few goodies to give him on semi-permanent "loan". He was just telling me how sick he was of World of Warcraft. Well, lil' bro, you're in for some good "old-fashion" fun cause they sure don't make em like they used to (games that is)...

hehe kids like the simple graphics. They don't care much for all that graphical violence. Maybe when they get a little older they do.

My niece (2) an nephew (7) are somewhat addicted to playing bubble bobble.

Good to hear more people are still enjoying the miggy.

Erno

Hi Magic-Merl!

It's great to see old users finding their way into sites such as this.  I still think the early-mid 90s was the best ever times for computer gamers.  There were so many great games on the Amiga at the top.

I don't think the gaming side will pick up for a while, but there is plenty of other exciting stuff happening!
