Yes I beleive you can fry things.
The roms should be inserted with the space on the left.
The motherboard has a nice white painted arrow on it telling you to do so. The notch on the IC also points to the left.

Note: swapping the roms will not fry anything but inserting them the wrong way; eg 180 degree rotated (notch to the right) or spare pins to the right may fry the roms.

Also make sure you are discharged before handling semiconductors. Grab the radiator or better use an anti static wrist band. I blew Roms once by just touching.

And all the information I just wrote is by head so can anyone confirm this. I dont want to be the cause of someones blown roms :).

Erno

Download a working softkick tool for your hw. Install the sw. Use proper 3.1 ROM image file for your hw. Test that the software works, that it actually changes the kickstart to 3.1. Install the software permanently.

No offence mate, but why didn't you look at the roms that were already in your A1200 and put the new ones in exactly the same way?

No offence mate, but why didn't you wait for an answer to your question? None of this shameless wasting of 3.1 roms would have happend. This is sure a sad day for.....wait I'm overreacting  ;-)

Actually I did something more stupid I dare not confess here before I did the wrong installation. I asked the question to verify my mistake and make sure I blew the roms. And hopefully someone else can find this thread in the future before attempting the installation. arggh ...

Well, the smart thing you did was sharing the knowledge.

Good luck finding new Roms

Heh - I just did something similar with a new, unused Subway USB interface... connected it to my A600 clockport adapter - pin 1 wasn't labelled, so I "guessed", based on how the cable would have had to bend awkwardly if connected the other way.

Needless to say, I got it wrong, and *pop* - no more Subway :-(

I then looked online, and found the instructions that I needed, which would have avoided the damage.
*sigh*

At least OS3.1 ROMs aren't *too* expensive, in the grand scheme of things... :-)

The 3.0 chips have exactly the same amount of pins as the 3.1 chips.  Which is two less than the number of holes in the A1200 sockets.

BTW, www.vesalia.de has the best prices on KS3.1 ROMS.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

So I'm not going senile then! :-D

Thank you very much kind sir.  I thought I was having a "T_Bone" moment for a while! ;-)
