A4000 3.1 roms
« on: April 02, 2005, 06:36:20 PM »
I'm thinking about upgrading my A4000D from OS 3.0 to OS 3.1 ROMS.  Are there any dealers in the US that have them in stock and at a decent price?

I guess that depends on your definition of 'decent price' ;-)
Check www.softhut.com I just ordered a set for my 4000.
They should be here on wendsday. And you might what to think
about droping in OS3.9 like I'm doing too.
But then that's going to double the 'decent price' of course :-)

I agree, the improvements are well worth the extra dough. :-)

Have you thought about soft kicking it ? I have an A1200, wich i bought new os3.1 roms, but managed to destroy them by puting them the wrong way (argh i know :))

I used blizkick for the 1200, and run os3.9 on it now...

Blizkick is only for blizzard accelerators, but there are other software you maybe can test?

@Methuselas

What are the improvements?  I mothballed my Amigas a couple of years ago and just started pulling them back from exile.  My A4000D has a Toaster 4000, TBC III, Hydra NIC, and some other goodies.  I'm planning on doing some video work again.  When I last used the Toaster under OS 3.0 I had some issues with random crashes that Newtek's Tech Support always blamed on the OS.  Was this one of the items that was corrected?

Thanks!

@krize

I've had issues trying to softkick to another OS when using a Toaster so I tend to avoid it.

The improvements that Amiga A4000 Kickstart 3.1 ROMS allow you to use AmigaOS 3.9 which will give you better iconing system, AmiDock like in OS4, better Workbench GUI, bug fixes, Internet stack and CD filesystem support.

I wouldnt recommend softkicking as an option.

Go ahead and just drop an order at softhut and be done with it. I  tried to no avail with tremendous support to load the A4000D 3.1 ROM image via the Kickflash OS4 card and Coyoteflash with absolute zero success. Save yourself a lot of headaches by getting the actual 3.1 ROMS over softkicking with any other application or after market hardware. You will be glad you did.

That reminds me of my A2000 rev 4.4 that I bought new in 1988.  Upgraded later with a 22mhz GVP accelerator.  I had a 2058 in the machine at the time.  I asked GVP if I could leave it in and they said sure.  Nope.  Crashed like crazy.  I remember installing Kings Quest IV and having an error message pop up when I clicked the mouse.  "You have done something we did not anticipate."  Ok.  I clicked the mouse.  Bye bye A2058.  Then I started having serial problems.  Ended up getting a Multiface II serial board.  GVP blamed C= and C= blamed GVP.  Bottom line: didn't work without a serial board.  After some time was informed/learned that I could upgrade my MFCII to 115200 speeds by changing a clock crystal.  Sent it to Prespect Technics in Montreal.  They kept the MFCII for a year and then after many nasty phone calls sent it back unchanged.  I ended up upgrading the board myself.  Prespect kept blaming the manufacturer in Germany.  Bottom line: good luck trying to find out who's "responsible". :(  Don't ask me about iFusion.... ;)

@KD7HTH

  I'll probably end up getting the 3.1 roms and OS 3.9 for the A4000D.  Not sure if I want to invest the $$$ in the A2000 though.  I'm in the process of buying an A2500 and another A2000 (this one as a parts spare)from a local Amiga guy.  The A2500 has a 040@40 accelerator installed. If the 3.1 roms make an improvement in how the Toaster behaves in the A4000D, I'll move the Toaster 2000 from the A2000 to the A2500 and buy the 3.1 rom for that one as well.  To think I was getting back into this as just a hobby...   :-D

@yogisumo

I'm an equal opportunity abuser.  I'll blame both C= and Newtek.
