Not being able to load amiga.org from home?
« on: March 29, 2005, 11:06:27 PM »
Hello folks,

I didn't find a proper forum to post this, so I hope this is the least-far from my topic.

before asking my ISP about this problem I wanted to ask first here. My problem is that I can't load Amiga.org's page from home, not with the PC nor with the Amiga, it always times out :-( I'm at work right now. Is there something I can do from my side to try to fix this? I got an ADSL line... a friend of ine who has a PC (and it's connected with the same ISP) has the same problem.. just wondering if there's something to do on the amiga.org's side or my own config side.

BTW, other sites , services, ftp, etc.. everything works just fine... weird.

cheers

I get similar problems here too. Random unreachable destination. Hit refresh and it works.  Never from uni though.  Mind you my home connection is 3Mb and the uni connection is 100Mb. :-D

Well , that could indicate a possible problem on Amiga.or's side. I hope the site admins try to look for a possible problem... it's annoying not being able to "stay in touch" with the community.. I knkow there aer other sites, etc.. but Amiga.org's in my top list.

D.

Same problem here.  At home I just get a blank white screen on both the PC and Amiga.  Strangely enough the little red/white cube icon does show up in the URL bar, but that's it.

No probs whatsoever viewing the site from work.  Some days it causes me to waste quite a bit of work time though  :-D

And have you tried clearing the cache/history? And a different browser?

Being a sys admin at a local ISP I am OHH so familar with this problem.
You see, ARIN just released the 72.0.0.0/8 netblock amongst others that have long been reserved, held, by ARIN.

Unfortunately, these subnets particularly 72.0.0.0/8 are still apearing on several stale bogon lists. I'd ask you guys if your ISP just switched over to a new ip range, if so then I'd say that's the problem. See what your IP adress is, punch it into www.networksolutions.com - the whois page, and that should give you the range your isp uses.. Amiga.org might then look at it's hosting company and see what their BOGON list looks like.

Well I'm at home now and Amiga.org is working fine for me!  It probably hasn't been more than a week since I last tried to get on from here, so something has happened very recently.  Hopefully it stays this way!

There is nothing we can do, because as far as our network and server goes, there is nothing wrong.  This is a problem that was initially reported by users in brazil and appears to affect Mexico as well.

Sorry, but this is beyond my control to fix.  You might check with your ISP to see why they can't reach it.

Thanks for your replies everybody.

I tried it again last night and I'm still unable to load
the page. I'll contact my ISP about this problem. Hopefully they can do something about it.

thanks!

... a friend of ine who has a PC (and it's connected with the same ISP) has the same problem..

Your friend could try something.. I don't know if Amiga has the same commands ?

If he opens a console (dos box, got to start -> run and type cmd) then he can try this command;

Ping www.amiga.org

or

tracert www.amiga.org

If the first one doesn't work and gives an error "request timed out" then tracert wil show where the time out occurs.

If the first one gives the error "could not find host" or something with a dns failure, it's a problem with your providers DNS servers (or both you and your friend have set an incorrect DNS entry, but that would give more problems)

Everything you say will be misquoted and used against you.

Users that are unable to access the site might try:
tracert 68.90.68.66 - see where it dies. Assuming you are coming from a geographically simalar location, find out what the next hop should be by compairing to the above. The IP of  that next hop, would indicate the troublemaker.

Well.. after that, you would need to get in touch with the admin for that router/firewall. Your ISP's subnet is probabbly blocked there. Of course, getting in touch with that person might be a hurdle, whois information these days is not allways good. Secondly, admins for major internet routers tend not to respond to single end user complaints. But if your ISP calls - they might respond to that!

@Wayne: let me add to your list Amiga users in Argentina (me & some other friends), and from Chile, as well as some of Brazilian Amiga users.

Funny thing is, at home i can surf the site with no problems. Problems are at work...where i spend more than half of my day...

Damn... im begginning to suffer from abstinence syndrome...

I'm in the UK, and it's only a random occurence when i'm at home.  If I refresh the browser, it works fine.

I'm beginning to wonder whether the post about alabama's marital aid ban has gotten Amiga.org banned from certain networks or workplaces.  I do know that some countries will intentionally censor their users, I just don't know if it's that area as well.
