Hello Amiga Org I am a newbie

Hi Guys,

I am a newbie to this here site and thus I am introducing myself. I am not a complete amiga virgin as I owned an A500+ in the 90's which is still at home (back in the UK) packed away. I would like to get reaquainted with the amiga brand and thought that this would be a good place to start. First off can anyone recommend a startup system, I was thinking along the lines of an A1200 or A3000 but I don't know what is available and what upgrades I can get my hands on. Any suggestions would be gratefully welcome.

I would like to do both the old games scene and surf the net, with also the possibility of some lightwave 3D. Does this mean that I can get away with a modded A1200 or will I have to go down the route of an A4000 with mods?

A few hours ago i've installed Workbench 3.9. There's something wrong with the icons (probably becous i'm running BlizKick to start Kickstart 3.1) but it goes fine on a Blizzard 030/50mhz accelerator. I'm using a Amiga 1200. If you gonna move the Amiga much and only gonna use it to surf in the internet, reading and writing text files, playing mod files then a upgraded A1200 goes fine. But, it can get pretty hot so you'll need to put something to hold it up a few centimeters from the table and remove the thing that covers the acceleration card under the Amiga. I realy do like the Amiga 1200...it's easy to upgrade some and is easy to take to a hack. But, if you want to put graphic card or CD then you have to put in a tower and do some changes the the Amiga case and put some cooling fans in it. Otherwise i would say the Amiga 4000 or the AmigaONE. The AmigaOS 4 looks great, smoth and fast in action! But, remember, if you changing from the 68k processor to a PPC processor, then it's harder to play the old Amiga games, and, it isn't possible to just put in a floppy and boot ém...

Edit: I didn't see your last post until a saw your latest post...i should say that the AmigaONE or a Amiga 4000 with a VooDoo card is the choise for you...and a PPC processor and some other stuff, but remember that it can be very expensive with all the upgrades so maybe a AmigaONE is a better idea...

But...i love the Amiga 1200...it's so cute and looks so good... :-D

WHDLoad will be your best friend. It'll allow you to run loads of old games on more recent hardware with great ease. That way you don't need to fiddle with degraders, and rebooting, and disk swapping whenever you want to play something. Just make sure you've got enough Fast RAM - 4MB is usually enough.

As for systems... cheapest and easiest to find will probably be an A2000 or an A1200, but the A2000 will need significant upgrading (and cash) to be usable as an internet machine. An A1200 with a 68030 accelerator should suffice for what you're planning to do. Adding a CD drive to a standard A1200 can be a bit challenging, though.

How compatible is the AmigaOne with the older stuff. I found UAE a couple of nights ago and have been busy playing old games using that, but I really want to support the Amiga and the only way that I can see progress being made in developing it further is to purchase one of the newer machines. Now is my understanding of it correct in that AmigaOS runs alongside a Linux system as dualboot or is it completely independent?

E-UAE is available for OS4 for old games.

Dunno how compatible it is since my A1 is up on the blocks at the
moment and I'm not that into gaming these days anyway.

AOS4 can run alongside Linux (same goes for MorphOS on the PagasosII,
which is another option you might consider - I'm typing this on a
PegI) but you can have OS4 installed on it's own. I have Debian
installed on my A1 but Ihaven't used  (Debian) in many months.

As you are still quite n00bular, you might have missed the security overhaul that's due to take place (although the notification appears on every page...)

Make ensure your email address you have listed on the site is valid seeing that tomorrow, all the passwords are getting randomized and you'll need to give your address to the forgotten password tool to get your (freshly magimixed) password mailed back to you...
