My Amiga is running too hot?
« on: March 26, 2005, 05:35:25 PM »
My Amiga is are getting horizontal lines after around 3-4 hours and some games doesn't want to work. Is maybe this a sign that the Amiga is running to hot? I have 1,2gb external HD, 030/50mhz and 32mb RAM and NO extra cooling. Does someone know how to mount extra cooling, the Amiga is startin' to getting hot....

Btw, how can i turn my accelerator OFF so it doesn't getting so hot until i have extra cooling?

I've seen horizontal line artifacts occur in some high scan modes when the custom chips get a tad warm.

Is your system in a normal case or in some sort of tower?

Extra cooling always helps, but it can be tricky to get a well defined airflow in a desktop A1200 type case.

What sort of accelerator are you using (I can't see if you have written this in your sig or something as I write this so apologies if it is written there) ?

Anyway, if there is room in your case, you can mount some small cooling ribs on the custom chips (assuming you aren't using some expansion that clips on them.

An 030 card typically shouldn't generate that much heat (some do, though).

3.5 inch hard drives contribute a lot of heat, but you say yours is external, so I guess it isn't that.

A long time ago, I ran my BlizzPPC in a desktop case. To address the cooling (and to give somewhere to put my external CD) I made a small 'dock' for the 1200 to sit on, that was exactly as tall as the CD and as large as the 1200 base.

The CD sat in the left hand side, tray front facing and the large heatsink I installed on the 040 poked into the remaining space on the right hand side.

I made sure the overall dock had no unwanted gaps or holes and then installed several large fans as air intakes at the back (with fine mesh covered holes to keep the dust out). The overall effect was to pull cold air in at the back. The only place for this air to exhaust was through the 1200, via the trapdoor and the underside vents at the front and ultimately out through the vents at the back.

Overall it worked quite well. Later I got a tower, so the cooling was no longer an issue.

I assume yours is an Amiga 1200 with Blizzard 030/50. I've had problems with Quake running on a similar system to yours due to overheating of the FPU. Now the game would work ok for about half an hour and then start to give weird graphic corruptions in the game and finally guru the machine to a halt. I used a 40 mhz clocked FPU instead of the recommended 50 mhz. Cooling both the CPU and FPU could help in your case. Problem is that the 1200's cramped case doesn't allow for extra fans or cooling bodies. Towering the system would certainly provide ample cooling. Otherwise, you could at least try running the amiga without the trapdoor lid on and maybe rising the entire case on some filt furniture stands or something. Good luck.

@SidVicious

Remove the trapdoor cover and keep it off. Lift the A1200 case off the deck using 1 inch high rubber feet (stick 'em on the underside with Bostik, etc). Those cork-shaped rubber door buffers work well.

The plan worked a treat with my old A1200/'030-50, which got very hot and regularly stopped working when rendering with Imagine. Never had a problem after fitting the legs and letting her breathe.

Cheers,

Another solution is to place a small heat sink ontop of the Lisa chip, this is the main aga gfx custom chip and on the escom A1200's gets extremely hot. Causes graphic glitches and random guru's if hot for many hours of operation.

A small 20mm square heatsink, placed ontop of chip with some thermal compound, add 4 small drops of heatglue on each corner should fix the heatsink on nicely. Cost of around $2 from most electronic stores :)

You could also leave off the top silver RV shielding
This also helps to prevent over heating

Completely useless? I can always be used as a bad example
