I'll say that I'm posting in forums here simply because it's easier to quote in reply, the way things are rigged up.
If, like ANN, you can do a newsfeed that errs on the side of openness, but lets editors sweep "no-good" threads off the front page (I was discussing the concept of a "Trashcan" section for ANN a while back, where all the flamebait that would otherwise disappear could be hid and preserved), then you've got the best of most worlds.
The trick is in being able to preserve the information the editors would otherwise think is crap, while still conveying that they're very convinced it's crap and are only preserving it for completeness. (This makes the service 'trustworthy,' because if a user happens to have a good idea in the middle of a flamewar, it'll still be there for him to recover or refer to by direct link... only problem is dealing with flood attacks, where you explicitly can't preserve the deluge, but Slashdot's timer theory is probably enough to help with that.)
