Floppy Disk Drive A4000
« on: March 21, 2005, 04:46:24 AM »
I figure that I need a new floppy disk drive for my A4000.  Why?
Well, 1) when I put a floppy in it just doesn't spin up.  (no amber light flashing) or sound of the floppy spinning.

    2)  other times the floppy is seen on the WorkBench, but it disappears and reappears every few seconds.

    3) During Video Toaster install,  (VT 3.1/4.3 floppy installation disk) starts installing, but stops with pauses with a SYSTEM REQUESTOR,  no disk present in CD0 or Volume VT4_3 has a read write error.  Now remember that the VT CD ROM is shooting info fast during the installation.  The CD is there.  The Blue bar stops and the above System Requestor comes up about 30 times during the install.   If I tap the front of the floppy disk drive, it continues with the installation.

What do I look for in  buying a floppy disk drive?   Do any of them work in an Amiga?  Any special things I should look for?  Thank you

The Amiga uses specially made diskdrives, you can't just slapp on a PC drive sadly. The A4000 come origianly with HD diskdrive but can opperate with DD diskdrive, you'll find these diskdrives at "your" Amiga dealer.

It sounds to me like you got a dirty diskdrive or the component that feeling if a diskette is precent is damaged/lose soldering. So before you go out and buy a new diskdrive check and clean the one you got.

Before you buy yourself an other one check out the powerconnection on the drive.
This one has often come loose of the print.
A simple resoldering often does the job!

What's your suggestion for cleaning a floppy drive?

I've pressed the power cables and made sure they were tight.   There's one plastic connection with four thin wires going into the back of the floppy disk drive (looking from the front) yellow, two Blue, and a orange wire-left to right)

I haven't been able to get any boot up the last day or two.  No floppy.  No hard-drive.

Anything else that might cause this?  The monitor is dark grey.
