Hi, I hope someone can help. I've always used my Amiga with a television but now that I'm starting to upgrade my hardware (and the fact that the TVs dying)I want to get a monitor. The problem is this. What monitors can I use?

I've seen a few Amiga monitors on EBay but will they display the higher screen modes without flickering? Would a standard Amiga monitor (i.e the 8833 Phillips) support all the A1200 screen modes? Would it require something along the lines of the flickerfixer cards that I think the A2000 had.

Also I see lots of auctions for VGA and SVGA adaptors. These look cool but I've read that they can't support native Amiga screenmodes without a scandoubler.

Basically I want a monitor that can support all Amiga screenmodes so I can have a nice roomy workbench, whilst still being able to play games.

A CBM 1084 or Philips would support normal PAL modes but would not DblPAL, you need a multisync monitor for higher resolutions. You can use the Overlay prefs to expand the Workbench a bit but those old monitors just aren`t really what you want. A SVGA monitor + scandoubler would work wonders...

Cool, thankyou. I'll stick away from older models. Would I experience any difficulties with running games with a SVGA monitor? I mean ones that don't load through workbench. I've also never seen a scandoubler on EBay, would a multisync monitor comfortably support all screenmodes?

Multisync monitors are the best you can get for non-RTG Amigas. The problem is, recent ones aren't actually multisync enough... if that makes sense. You need a monitor that supports frequencies from 15KHz through 31KHz. I don't think there's been one produced for the general consumer marketplace in at least 7 years.

Some examples of true multisyncs:
Electrohome 1440
CEI 1962
Nec Multisync 3D
Commodore 1942(close enough), 1950, 1960

Add CTX AD-1970 to that multisync monitor list.  I still have one connected to my A4000T.

Microvitec produced a range of Amiga-compatible multisync monitors that were popular in the UK in the 1990s (some were actually re-branded by Commodore and Acorn, amongst others).

It appears Microvitec still makes this style of monitor. Have a look here on Microvitec's web site and check out the Desk-Scan 1402. Only a 14-incher, but will do all the classic Amiga and A1200 screenmodes.

Alternatively, you might have some luck with certain LCD TFT displays. Some of these may sync down far enough...

Those LCD TV's must work, as they can feed off a TV aerials signal, so I presume the RF output from an Amiga would be just fine.

It hasn't actually arrived yet (due today), so I can't say that it works really. But it should (supports 15khz-50khz).

It has plenty inputs, but I bet I end up spending a fortune now on cabling ....

It's 11 years old, so I hope there is no screen burn etc. £160 (+40 postage) is a LOT of money to pay for an 11 year old monitor. But I'm hoping its of a decent quality. Back in 1994 they were listed for around $3,500

The general problem with these LCD monitors with TV input is that they only seem to support PAL or NTSC - not both. If you can find one that supports both, or can get by with only one, then go for it.

Forget about the new Microvitec. As I mentioned in another thread, I emailed them about it - price for a single end-user unit is over $1000. They're meant for industrial bulk purchases, unfortunately :-(
