Starting again!

I have just got my amiga up and running again! Bad news is the operating system is such a mess and its driving me mad. I have a 1200 running os 3.9. i have a blizzard ppc and a bvison card(not working so a good old flicker fixer to the old pc monitor) and the usal rest ( cd rom writter zippy ect)with ide fix 97. The problem is, i want to start again with a new hard drive but i am afraid i wont ever get it running again! Any ideas were to start? as i have forgotten almost all i knew. (whitch was not much)

Make a backup of the most important things and re-install? its a lot of stuff to fiddle around with when installing the OS and all the hacks & patches again but isnt that some of the fun? + you will learn some stuff again .

I kinda think it will be that simple, daft question really i was just hoping for some handy hint. i am just going to swap hard drives. I just hope i can get a small 3.25" drive as i dont want tons of partions! 5gb should do it.
