Is LINUX the only way to go?
« on: March 12, 2005, 04:30:56 PM »
I am really pissed off with OS3.9, and 4.0 is in the makes "sine die".

I want to browse the web? Well, Ibrowse is really nice, but its shortcomings appear sooner or later. I just wanted to buy some tickets for the movies a few minutes ago, and... I can't do it because of Java stuff. The computer COULD manage to do it, if only the software was there.

I want to write some letters at the office? There are nice packages out there, but we use OpenOffice at work. The Amiga COULD run OpenOffice... if someone had ported it.

Now, if I install LINUX, I could use all that, right? I mean I could have OpenOffice on the Amiga, and a powerfull web browser... Right?

Is there any simple way to install LINUX on an Amiga? Are there drivers for Mediator devices? Is it possible to dual-boot or should I use UAE (funny to use UAE on an A4000).

... Or should I use a Wintel box because I can't buy two tickets for the movies with the Amiga? The idea makes me a bit discouraged.

No. Someone would still need to port OpenOffice, and the web browser to the platform.

I browse isn't the only Amiga browser you know.. Have you tried Voyager? It does support SSL.. If you are buying tickets off of a java app, I have no solution for you.. I just think that Voyager supports flash, and has really the best Amiga specific solution right now..

It works with AmigaOS 3.9. I am not sure about 4.0 or if they have plans. But this really is THE BEST if you want to use classic Amiga software this rocks. The company is great too..

Voyager Web Browser

It supports:

    * HTTP/1.1 connection keepalive, content negotiation and resume support
    * FTP connects keepalive and resume support
    * SSLv2, SSLv3 and TLSv1 encryption support, with up to 168 bit keys
    * 'Javascript' (ECMA-Script) scripting support
    * Low Level Plugin API supporting embedded objects

    * Fully user-controllable GUI with custom control panel placement, configurable navigation and fastlink buttons.
    * Macromedia Shockwave Flash compatible Player
    * Versatile Bookmarking system utilizing ContactManager
    * Internal web page editing with HTML tag highliting
    * Internal GIF, JPG, PNG, XBM decoding
    * Image buffers in Fast RAM

OS4 already cover some of the gap between other modern OSes.
It become better everyday, and more software is released or announced.

Jamiga is in development. Open Office will come for OS4, and we all hope FireFox as well. But when? We don't know. At least for a browser point of view, Paihia seems the first which will see the light of the day.

IIRC, Mozilla runs, although slowly, on m68k-Linux.
Beating the dead horse since 2002.

Are you sure it's Java and not Javascript? If it is infact javascript that kept you from purchasing the tickets, then Voyager maybe what you need.
Java is coming, as has been mentioned. The JAmiga project is coming along ( http://www.jamiga.org ). Don't worry, yes the news on their site is quite old but it is still in active development.
OpenOffice is being ported ( http://amigaopenoffice.org ). They have been in contact with the JAmiga project as java is needed for some OO functions.
Mozillia is coming or Firefox. There is a rather large bounty for this project. ( http://www.discreetfx.com/AmiZilla.html )

It'll just take a bit of time...
