Apollo A630 doesn't run WHDLoad Games ! HELP !!
« on: March 07, 2005, 02:37:12 AM »
First of all, sorry if this is the wrong forum. But as i'm not sure if this is a Hardware or Software problem, here it goes.

In my A600 with an Apollo A630 and 32MB Fast Ram fitted, i can't run most of my WHDLoad installed games.

Only very few games runs, and the ones that i enjoy the most, doesn't run.

In the WHDLoad docs, it's stated that the MMU option (cli argument or Tooltype) should be enabled for the 030 processors (except for the EC version, that doesn't have a MMU). The problem is, if i enable the MMU option, my amiga freezes even before the WHDLoad window appears (the one that gives you game info, quit key, etc).

If i try to run the same game with the MMU disabled (NOMMU argument, or no argument at all regarding MMU), after the WHDLoad info window appears, the resolution changes, and my tv goes blue screen, as if there was no video signal.
Or the screen goes white, and then half the screen goes black. Seems like the sync goes crazy. And then i have to reboot the machine, because even the quit key doesn't work.

The only game i can see a little more action is Pegasus. I can see the Gremlin logo, then the Pegasus opening screen for a short time, and then the screen goes the white and black weird stuff.

The games that doesn't work on my A630, works flawlessly in my A1200 BPPC/060, and in the A600 if booted from floppy.

I have enabled the MMU with the CPU command (CPU fastrom), and used a little app from Aminet, called CheckMMU, and it reports that i don't have an MMU ! But as the app is a little old, i don't know what i should think.

By the way the processor in the A630 haves this code: SC414075RC50. It's a 030 50MHz CPU. Do someone knows if this processor haves a full MMU ? Could this problem be because a malfunction MMU ? Is there some way to completly disable the MMU ?

Sorry for the long message.

Thanks for any help.
Marcelo.

Hello Mr Mugo :-)

It worked with almost every single game before you purchased it from me.  I believe you may have to upgrqade your WHDLoad to the latest version (16.2?)

Also run SnoopDOS for the ones that freeze before the WHDLad splash window opens.

I never had to change anything in the WHDload games Tooltypes Icons except adding NTSC....since I play my Games in NTSC mode if possible.

But Run SnoopDOS.its excellent and might help you locate the problem.if you dont have it...get it on Aminet I think.

If that doesnt work...try another type of 32MB SIMM

Also of course make sure you have everything that is required by the WHDLoad package in your C: directory..........VERY IMPORTANT!
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

 @leirbag28

Thanks for your feedback Gabe.

I have the latest version of WHDLoad package (16.4), and it's registered.

I already tried SnoopDOS. But there's no time left so the

SnoopDOS can track the problem. Even in the log file.

The memory thing i haven't tried, but it was my next step.

As soon i have some spare time i'll try it.

My WHDLoad install is complete, for sure.

It's really an odd problem. If you was able to run your games, and my games works on my A1200, then it must me the memory . . . (fingers crossed) :)

Thank you.
Regards,
Marcelo.

Although the A630 fanatic Lierbag will certainly tell you otherwise (the guy who most probably will be buried with an A630 card as his last dieing request), A630 simply does not work reliably with WHDLoad and this is also covered in WHDLoad FAQ, if you take a look at its homepage.

There could be a particular revision of A600 motherboard that is more compatible than others, however I have yet to find it.
