Got an Apollo 68060 +SCSI module. (...can it be split up?)
« on: March 05, 2005, 01:58:37 PM »
Hi,

Tomorrow I'm going to have a look at someone's Apollo 68060 board because I'm maybe buying it from him. It has a SCSI and harddrive aswell. I'm really not interested in the SCSI stuff. IDE suits me fine.

What you think? Can I split it up and sell the module and harddisk on to someone else? If so, what will it go for (money wise)?

Thanks.

sell it on ebay.. or buy a scsi to ide connector for the board.. available at any online pc store.

Hard to tell, never seen one in real life, but it looks like it should be soldered to the board somehow.

I might be interested, still doubting if I should go for the Blizzard 1260 or the Apollo. I need SCSI, for the Blizzard I already have a SCSI controller (plugged in my 1230 now)

Im going to buy it anyway. But this hobby is getting expensive. And I really don't need the SCSI. What are the benefits anyway. I', happy with my 4G 2.5inch IDE. But if a SCSI->IDE converter can be used to connect it and it give's me a huge speed boost I might go for it.

I'll think there'll be a speed boost, but for only the hard drive it's probably not worth the cost. It's the other uses of SCSI that make it worth holding on to: Cheap scanners and easy connection of a CD drive or additional hard drive if you ever need one.

A CD drive on a full SCSI bus will be much faster than IDE or PCMCIA->SCSI.
Easy access to an additional hard drive will be most welcome if you ever need to do backups, salvage files, emergency boot, etc.

Hello,

The Apollo SCSI controller is not as good as the Blizzard one (not fast SCSI, not DMA). I think it will not bring much more than the onboard A1200 ide controller, unless you would like to connect easily external drives (CDrom drives or hard drives) to your A1200.

AFAIK, I have an Apollo1230 board and I don't think I will add the SCSI controller. But if I had a Blizzard 1230 or higher, I would certainly have considered it.

IIRC its a "software pulled" SCSI controller . . .go figure!!

It rely heavly on the CPU, so with a 060 . . .maybe.

This should be the SCSI-Modul you are talking about.

http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1142

I personally only had A2000 and A4000 Apollocards and there the scsi-part is soldered directly to the board. Judjeing from the description this SCSI-module is as crappy as all Apollo SCSI-thingies, as there is no SCSI-Chip on the board only some gluelogic that mimics a SCSI-bus and let the CPU handle all the load (so cutting away nearly ALL advantages of SCSI) plus the SCSI controllers from Apollo are the most incompatible I have come across, basically If you don`t have the drives that are listed in the manual you are out of luck.

As for selling it: Well, you shouldn`t expect much more then the shipping fee for it, lets say 15-20 EUR or so (while a Blizzard SCSI-Module goes for 50-70 EUR).
Maybe you get more from a collector, as I haven`t seen much of those around (for obvious reasons, it was allready well known that Apollo controllers suck when they were new back then).
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

Ok it sucks badly as I read above. But I was looking for an 060 and that's what I'll get. I think I'll sell the SCSI drive and, if possible, the SCSI module.

Thanks alot everybody I know more about it now. Software pulled SCSI makes no sense at all. I'll stick to my IDE laptop harddisk.

So I got the 68060 Expantion. He demonstrated the thing using his amiga which I got to take home with me for "free". Anyway he wasn't even using the scsi module himself. He had a 1Gig on the IDE which he removed.

So now I have an Apollo 060@50Mhz (that he had clocked 66Mhz but I put the jumper back where it belongs) and 32MB ram on it. A SCSI module to spare since I have not one SCSI device and a very badly yellowed A1200.

He even gave me a book (in german) about amiga hardware. So I have some translation to do  since I dont speak german.

We'll thanks for all the responses I think I'm going to play around with the newly obtained horsepower.
