Hum,
you don`t have a raid setup....
rename/switch off
raid_tool.exe

C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe

(can someone confirm this?)

Thanks for that.

I checked all parts of the Start Menu (including the default and all users) and there was nothing there.

Just checked those points in the registry and there's no mention of the RAID dir except for loading the raid_tool.

Anymore ideas?

Export the contents on the RAID tool key and then delete it, see what happens.

Deleting raid_tool from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run doesn't make a difference.  The key re-appears on reboot.  I had to delete it and reboot twice before I realised.

Booting into safe mode doesn't open the dir.

--edit--

Removing the raid_tool from msconfig makes no difference except for not starting the raid_tool.  The dir still opens.

You might want to have a seat before you read on...

I have actually solved the problem... with help from a PC forum :-o

:-P

I posted the problem, they asked for a HijackThis log, posted it back and they told me to fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DisplayTrayIcon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\TrayIcon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C-Media Mixer] C:\Program Files\PCI Audio Applications\Bin\AudioRack.exe /MixerStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AudioDeck] C:\Program Files\VIA Technologies, Inc\Audio Deck\ADeck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - Global Startup: GetRight - Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\GetRight\getright.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: VIA RAID TOOL.lnk = C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe

Which I did (except for GetRight).  Rebooted and no dir opened :-D

--edit--

Removing the raid_tool.exe on it's own didn't have an effect, so it must've been something else, or partly something else...

--edit2--

Not that I didn't have any faith in you guys, far from it, but I didn't seem to be getting anywhere at the start (yesterday morning) so I posted on another forum to see if they were stumped.  I really hoped that they would be :-D

HijackThis is a brilliant tool, however I never thought of using it to troubleshoot something like this. I assume that you could have simply removed;

"O4 - Global Startup: VIA RAID TOOL.lnk = C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe"

and that would have done it, oh well, main thing is that its fixed and we have all learnt something new :-)

Yeah, HijackThis is excellent, used it once before.

But I never thought of using it in this type of situation - only used it to remove trojan-like stuff before, not normal startup stuff :-)

I wasn't sure what all the nwiz stuff was, and I think Nv is Nero VisionExpress, but then I could be totally wrong as usual :-D

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DisplayTrayIcon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\TrayIcon.exe

don't know what that is. . . .

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

you have an nVidia display adapter. . . .

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C-Media Mixer] C:\Program Files\PCI Audio Applications\Bin\AudioRack.exe /MixerStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AudioDeck] C:\Program Files\VIA Technologies, Inc\Audio Deck\ADeck.exe

your onboard audio. . . .

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

QuickTime's "run QuickTime in the background so movies start faster" thingy. . . . Probably checks for updates and uses your computer for Apple's plan to take over the world as well.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Real Player's quick launch / auto-update / nag tool.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe

Nero startup stuff.

O4 - Global Startup: GetRight - Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\GetRight\getright.exe

You know what that is.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

You don't need this. Office runs fine without it.

O4 - Global Startup: VIA RAID TOOL.lnk = C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe

As was said, this was probably your problem. The shortcut might have been broken. Anyhow, this would have been in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\. You must have missed it earlier. . . .

Ah yes, I forgot about nVidia - got a GeForce FX5200.  The rest of the stuff I knew about.

Nope, it definitely wasn't there.  It wasn't in the Default or the 2 user accounts either.  That's one of the first places checked.  The only place calling raid_tool.exe was the registry.  Saying that it is being called from a .lnk file.  Or a .lnk file that should have been.

After running HijackThis (before fixing) I did a search for via raid tool.lnk and it turned up nothing.  God knows where the file ended up.

I remember from the days of 98 that was the display settings icon that appeared in the system tray, didn't even know it was present in XP, must have been added by nVidia. Either way you don't need it.

Hum,
is it not `CacheBoost`?
And probably worth keeping...it`ll optimize the mem a bit better with XP...

adz is right.  I never even thought about the nVidia tray icon since installing the drivers.

It's not in the tray now, and it was definitely there before fixing the stuff above, so the entry is more than likely that.

I never had any cache boost type things at all.
