Paper disks

 Hum,
i spotted this quirky article...

"Japanese researchers have created eco-friendly paper disks that can hold 25 gigabytes of data, almost five times more than a normal DVD.  
Happily for environmentalists, paper disks could save some 1,200 trees, the amount needed to print out the data they contain.
You can print any label directly on the disk and dispose of the information by cutting up the paper with a pair of scissors.
These disks will be on the market within a few years"

Hum,
don’t know...
(5 seconds?)

But a recent test on normal DVDS show that they start to show signs of `DVD rot` after only 18 months....(and become unreadable)...

Perhaps we were all a bit conned at the resilience and longativity of CDS @ DVDs...

At least we will be told the truth about these new disks - er, that they are supposed to self destruct...

Half the blu-ray discs I've seen pictures of are in plastic cartridges, which would provide some protection... But suddenly it's not so environmentally friendly.

It's a classic conflict of interests. Nobody wants their data to be biodegradable.

In answer to my own question clicky

So it's just the substrate is made of a paper based material. For a while I thought they were implying the paper itself was the storage medium :lol:

The whole back catologue of Playboy could fit on one paper disc.  Oh the irony of it, back to paper we go. :-)
