Will we ever get there?
« on: February 27, 2003, 08:47:29 PM »
I'm getting a bit worried... now the PC-words has Serial-ATA! They also has AGP 8x, DDR... And what do we get WHEN the AmigaOne gets released? A motherboard with SDRAM 133, AGP 2x, ATA100 IDE-controller. When it gets released it will be even more outdated then it was just recently. I know that AOS 4 is really fast and that the difference from the hardware of today is huge but still... I just want to tell a PeeeCeee user ****** you, my system is much cooler* :-D

What can I say....

It's even more sad when you realize that AmigaOne is mostly "off the shelf" pc-x86 standard parts.

The only thing that seems to haunt it is the ArticaS. They should have scrapped this long ago when the difficulties with it appeard. Might still be fine for embedded use but it sadly doesn't support the G4 MPX bus.

It'll be another year before Serial ATA starts producing any performance advantages over present ATA100 systems.

Again, AGP 8x will take a while before it starts being seriously used, most people don't see much difference between AGP 2x and 4x at the moment, and 4x has been out for quite a while.

I'd guess DDR RAM will come along for the AmigaOnes when G4 >1GHz CPUs come in (end of this year? total guess), but that's the only really important thing out of the things you listed :)

(The present A1s have ATA 100 don't they?  If not, then that is the most important next upgrade)

Also bear in mind that future versions of AmigaOS are unlikely to double the minimum spec hardware like Windows does on each release :-)

Your A1 system *will* be much cooler :-) ... have you seen the max heat power outputs of the latest x86 CPUs?  the P4 3GHz weighs in at 105W!!! Cook your dinner on that!

Forget Serial ATA right now, look at the tests done by Tomshardware and others and you'll see that it ain't impressive right now. The important thing we need is to get OS4 taking advantage of 'ballpark' hardware now. As soon as it's sold in reasonable figures (ie more that none ;~) expect advances to come thick and fast.
All the hard core AGP, DDR etc only apply to either serious gamers and video professionals. The average computer user will not necessarily see a reason for any extras thrown at them.

True enough but given the current hardware limitations we face even this hardware change is a major leap forward, most Amiga users (myself included) are limited to the 68xxx series of cpus whilst others have PPC with max speeds of around 240 Mhz and an OS thats written for 68k.

To put it another way, my Amiga 1200 68030/50 with 10meg of ram boots quicker and generally feels better than my 1.2Ghz pc with 512mb of ram.  If the hyperions guys manage to keep the Amiga style with the new os (ie light on system resources) even the entry level G3 should move faster than a greased peanut  :-)

There are so many factors besides the hardware factor that would appeal to people. Theres the feel of the os, theres the graphic interface, theres how you choose to tower your computer.
Think about it: If hardware was the only factor for people to deside if a computer was kewl, imacs would be looong gone

Thanks guys! I'm feeling much better now :-) . I guess that it will be like this... Those who use PC's and never really try or care about an amiga won't understand how cool it is no matter what they release. So... for us who knows better (and former amiga-owners) will really appreciate this upgrader a lot.

Heh, heh, heh, no  :-D  :-D !!

What's going to be REALLY great is, their patches and bug fixes will be PAINLESS to install. Being as modular as AOS4.0 (AOS period) is!

Amiga! Changes right before your eyes.

So I guess that A500, 600, 1000, 2000, CDTV, CD32, are pure garbage then? Thanks for posting here.

I'm hoping that OS4 will actually be released first, before I start boasting about it :-)

( I also hope that there will be lots of boasting about it to be had as well :-))
