The Brick
« on: February 21, 2005, 11:25:05 AM »
I've just got 'new' A1200 with a 4gig HD. Having just bought an external floppy on EBay I'm starting to get a bit concerned about whether the brick will be able to handle this extra strain. Does anyone know what the expansion limit is before you need another power supply. Also I've heard that the A500 brick is more powerful. Is this true?

The standard A1200 brick should be fine.  I've had mine running with a 2 GB Seagate HD, and an external floppy drive and it was fine.  I think you'll only start to have problems if you put an accelerator in there as well.  And yes, the A500 bricks are more powerful.  (Although I don't know if this applies to all or only some)

If you can lay your hands on a heavyweight A500 powersupply then you can use any harddrive WITH a CDrom WITH 3 floppies WITH turboboard (Blizzard 1230/4 + 96 Mb in my case) ... I had this running in my plastic Infinitiv tower that didnĀ“t have an internal powersupply

Great, thanks for that. I think I'll swap it with the brick from my A500 or A570 just to be on the safe side, also the new lightweight power supplies don't keep your feet as warm.

With a bit of practise your toes become quite dextrous. The ultimate Amiga setup for this is A500 & A570, a brick for each foot.

LOL, yep, exactly.  I had that setup for quite a few years.  The A500 and A570 are waiting patiently in the cupboard for me to get them out again.   Might do it when I get cold feet,  :-D

Sadly it's sometimes necessary, what with the amigas being chained to the wall.

The 'Heavy' issue is something I always wondered about the Amiga PSU.

First Ami was a 500+ which came with a very light PSU. Looked like my mates PSU from his A500 but it was VERY light in comparison.

I upgraded to an A1200 and this came with a heavier PSU which looked different - more like the CD32 PSU (completely sealed, no screws, with a 'ribbed' top) but in beige.

Was the weight anything to do with the amount of power these things could supply i.e. was a heavier PSU able to supply more power?

My A1200 PSU was filled with, what looked like resin... that made it really heavy... my A500 PSU was just a transformer in a box..

Yeah, my A1200's PSU was way heavier than my A500's too. It's almost like the prototype A1200 PSU got penis envy and snuck into the design department one night.

Suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder, I need something to touch with my feet when I'm sat at a computer. However my Miggy's cord was shortened for reasons I don't quite recall so my brick spent most of its time on the desk.
