Tools Daemon Problems.
« on: February 17, 2005, 12:15:18 PM »
I hope someone can help. I'm trying to install the incredibly useful (or at least it should be) Tools Daemon on an A1200. I've got it on the Fred Fish CD on my A570. I copied the disk to a floppy on the A500 and then onto the A1200's hard drive. It took a lot of fiddling with copying libraries but I got it installed and dragged the program into WBStartup. When the machine boots up nothing happens though. If I go and double click the Tools Daemon icon it tells me it's exiting, as if the program was running successfully.

Is it because it's an old version and not compatible with WB3+ or is it something dumb I'm doing wrong (I suspect the latter but you never know.)

Great, thanks for that, this is a far more up to date version. To be honest I think Workbench 2.0 was an innovation when my version came out.

DO u have an accelerated A500?  that may be important IIRC, as there might be an 68020 version of ToolsDaemon?

By the way ToolsDaemon is essential, people would be nuts to not have this these days...........its Amiga's START Menu!

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

No it's a standard A500+ with an A570. It works fine on that. The A1200's only expansion is a 4gig HD. It's the fact that it just does nothing that I don't get. The program's obviously running at some level as I can exit it. Initially I was being told that there was something missing from the S: directory although that stopped after the 3rd or 4th install attempt. It is kinda like being naked without Tools Daemon. I've found something else called ToolsManager on another Fred Fish disk, but it doesn't seem quite as comprehensive.

have you installed ToolsDaemon-handler in L:

and the new ToolsPrefs in Prefs:

Delete (if you have one) or convert (with the utility Convert bundled in the archive) the OLD 1.0 prefs file called:

ToolsDaemon.menu in the S: directory.

The Toolsdaemon.menu was what was causing the problem. I installed everyting else, there were two install programs. One was a Shell icon that was supposed to install the reqtools.lib. It kept giving a failed returncode 20, so I copied it into Libs manually. The other was an IconX script that told me it had done the necessary and all I had to do was drag the Toolsdaemon icon into WBStartup. Couldn't seem to find the Toolsdaemon.menu. This was the error message that coming up on reboot although it has since stopped.

Could this have anything to do with the fact that I copied just the disk 561 drawer off the Cd onto floppy. Is there something else on the CD that I need to copy? (Sorry, as you can probably tell I'm not exactly a technical wizard.)

i don't understand.

You have to download and install the new version (the above URLs).

The 1.0 is too ancient.

The files to copy are:

ToolsDaemon and ToolsDaemon.info in SYS:WBStartup/

ToolsPrefs in SYS:Prefs/

ToolsDaemon-handler in SYS:L/

ToolsDaemon.menu in SYS:S/

If you haven't this ToolsDaemon.menu file:

start SYS:Prefs/ToolsPrefs and SAVE.

Success!!!
I've downloaded all the necessary files and put them where you said. I've rebooted and we're in business. Thankyou so much Framiga, my Workbench has finally crawled out of the dark ages.
