Opera & Smilies
« on: February 27, 2003, 02:27:20 PM »
I've just switched browser from Netscape 7 to Opera 7.02 Bork Edition and the javascript doesn't seem to like the smilies.  When I open the more window, all I get is...

l>

Javascript is enabled, it doesn't matter if Opera is set to be identified as IE6, Mozilla or Opera.

This maybe because you are doing stuff behind the scenes, but I thought you guys might like to now.

Thinking about it, you might have image download turned off (press G and see if that works)

I know exactly what you mean VincentAC.
I have the same problem here and I got Opera 7.1 from the opera site.
Unfortunately I think i will uninstall it because i use MSN  alot, and if Opera is loaded at the same time MSN closes itself.

Yep.. MS don't like you using alternatives to their products!  :-x

Tried it and it doesn't work.  But if the image download was off I should still get the list of Smilies, but there's nothing there except:

There's nothing else in the window at all.

Glad to see it's not just me.

If I can't get it to work, I'mm gonna have to write down all the text versions of the smilies and keep it handy. :-(

I just had a go of Opera, came on a cover cd with Macworld. Pretty slow, haven't tested it on AO yet.

I can't seem to download images in IE 5.2.2 or any other version of IE in OS X,  does anyone know why?

In OS 9 I could hold my mouse button down and download an image to disk. Any answers? :-?

Why you did that?
Netscape 7 is way the best browser right now (excluding Mozilla > 1.01 versions), supporting the majority of todays standards perfectly.

Opera 7 has a nice skin though and handles most non-dynamic stuff ok, but I would put it behind IE 6...

I havn't tried Netscape 7 yet, but Opera 7.x is vastly superior to Netscape 6.x IMO.

Opera does not support ActiveX controls (they view them as a security issue) so
you can't access sites that use them.

My favorite feature of Opera is its ZOOM feature.
It zooms everything (graphics/text/buttons etc)
and still looks good zoomed. It is a variable zoom
and is not limited to set incraments like IE & Netscape.

I have found only a few sites that I goto that are unusable in Opera.
These I access via IE6.

I have found Opera 7.x speed to be just under IE6 and way faster then Netscape 6.x.
Can't compare with Netscape 7 as I have not downloaded it yet.

I've changed to Opera v7.02 simply becaus it's a hell of a lot faster than Netscape.  I generally don't need a browser with all the latest flash/shockwave/general plugins because I don't look at sites that need them.

IE6.  I would rate that behind Netscape.  I only use IE if I need to save the pictures of a web page along with the page itself, other than that it's of no use to me.

Ok, I have downloaded/installed/tested NS 7.

1. It is not faster then Opera 7.x.

2. As you can see, smilies work! (using for this message)

3. Zoom SUCKS, only zooms text and mangles the header of Amiga.org, zoom incramenst with Ctrl++/- are to large.

4. Still better than IE5/6

No, Netscape is not faster, the way I've found it, Opera is notable faster than Netscape 7.

Yes, the smilies work in Netscape, I just can't get them to work in Opera.

I've never used Zoom before.  Let's see.  I don't like it at all, so no worries there.

Hi,

I have used Opera for a few years now and have got used to some of the issues. I currently use Opera 6.05 (Registered) and recently downloaded version 7.01 and i can agree that 7.01 is way faster than anyother browser. But i  found there was quite a few things i could not get on with, Like, The changed interface, Thing taken out that were in earlier versions, etc. :-x  So i went back to 6.05 which works ok with the smilies. :-)

Hope this helps,

Regards
