Samba + DHCP
« on: February 01, 2005, 03:33:03 AM »
Hi all...

I used Samba to shaer files between the (stupid) PC and my beloved A4000... But recently I changed from Static IPs to DHCP (makes wireless comm. between Playstation and Router easier).

Since I chaged to DCHP I haven't been able to share files between the 2 machines. Samba seems not to like DHCP, I use Smb-Net to mout PC devs in the Amiga side.

Has any1 andle this before and get DHCP to work properly, any help will be apreciated.

Thanks
Ronky

Yes, I have! First I'll sum up all the equipment that is connected:
- Amiga-A1200
- Amiga-A1
- XP-Box
- XP-Laptop

They take up all the ports of the DHCP-enabled router that is further connected trough an ADSL-modem to the outer world.

All computers EXCEPT Amiga-A1200 use DHCP. DHCP range runs from 1 to 150 on the router (i.e. 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.150). Of that range the A1200 takes up 192.168.1.149.
Bear in mind that a DHCP-serverhands out a particular IP to a certain computer only once. The next time you connect again to the DHCP-server (the router) you get the same IP again for the same computer. Which is a very fine thing.

In both L:'s I,ve put SMB-handler which uses mount files.

Somewhere I keep mount files. One for every share on the computer to be connected to. These shares have to be defined in smb.config. Keep in mind that SaMBa is a beast!

But first things first: can you 'ping' your A4000 form the PC (START-->Execute -->ping )?
If this one fails then you have to check cabling, router settings and the A4000's IP/TCP-stack.

If it does NOT fail then you have to check your SaMBa-settings.

Feel free to ask more. I've got this setup running since last Sunday and it works flawlessly!

Have success,

Jettah

Hi Jettah!

First of all, thanx for the info. As I said before, both machines could communicate to each other swell when I used static IPs, the problem came along when I changed to DHCP.

Somehow, I guess it's a firmware error, my 2WIRE modem/router doesn't like static IPs, I've tried everything to set them up as it used to work, I recently adsked for a replacement of the unit to see if it was a hardware error (I am waiting for the replacement to arrive).

I will make some tests using the config you just mentioned, and I'll also try to move things around in Samba SWAT to see if things improve.

Thanks again!

Hello again!

Well, it worked uout fine, all devices can see each other fine and can share files.

Next on, printing... have you been able to print form the Amiga to a printer attached to the PC? printer is a HP Photosmart 7760, no driver for the amiga (and I dont have an USB card in it). Can it be done?

Thanx
Ronky

No, I haven't ventured out on such an enterprise yet. It is a part of the universe that I still have to explore... :-o

Nice to see things are working again.
