« on: January 11, 2005, 11:31:19 AM »
Does anyone know of a list of compatible pcmcia memory cards for the 1200/600?  Thanks.

Hello Argus,
You have to be careful as I once bought a PCMCIA Mode 2 card and it
didn't fit.

There is PCMCIA 1 (A600/A1200), PCMCIA 2 and PCMCIA 3.

The Mitsubishi 'Melcard' seems to work. It is a 2Mb SRAM card (memory
or disk use) and has a battery to keep disk data saved upon power
down.

The part number is:  MF32M1-LCDAT01 -Mitsubishi Electric.

There has to be more but 2Mb seems to be the largest PCMCIA-1 SRAM
card I can find.

If you want to try another alternative you could make a SCSI flash
card reader. There's tips on Aminet for PCMCIA-SCSI stuff.

I don't think the A1200/A600 can address more than 4meg in the PCMCIA space anyway... oh, and Flash memory doesn't work :-)

i got one of them 4mb pcmcia cards and its slow, but a orginal a600 is slow from the start so you shouldnt care about slowness... 2mb chip and 4mb fast did make my a600 experience much better. now i can finally use it to work with deluxe paint/sound trackers more efficient, instead of only playing crappy disk  games... if your wondering i have a 30mb hd, a kickswitch with 1.3 & 3.1 ks rom and a scandoubler/flicker switcher extern for it also :)

a 4mb pcmcia ramcard is a must if you not/cant use an axx card... but  they are damn hard to find, good luck in the hunt ;)

Does the 4MB limit apply when using cards formatted as disk?

I would expect so, as the only real difference between the two is storage after power off, it still has to be addressed by Gayle.

Not exactly.  The PrepCard utility will only support cards up to 4MB.  But, using a driver like CFD you can use flash media of very large size (I've used 16M).

You can usually find suitable PCMCIA SRAM cards on eBay.  I have a 4M card with battery for my A600.  In OS2.x when you use the card as memory you also get BATT_MEM: (or was it BATT_DISK:) a recoverable 880k RAM disk.  I've been toying with using this as a quick bootdisk to run relokick, etc.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Okay, so if I understand correctly, I need to look for Type I or Type II SRAM PCMCIA card up to 4MB (will work with PrepCard utility).  If I were to do the scsi thingy, could I use this to give my A600 lots of fast ram or is it that just to set up a disk drive on the pcmcia port?   Thanks for you advice.
