Emulators Answer the Call
By Jacob Ogles (Wired News)

02:00 AM Jan. 10, 2005 PT

Longtime technophiles who miss their first computer are finding new ways to use modern gizmos to relive their geeky childhoods. Some hackers have started porting emulators for old systems like the Amiga or Commodore 64 into their cellular phones and PDAs.

While the phones have physical limitations like a small key interface and screen, the modern devices are actually far more powerful than the archaic machines they are now imitating.

So, Does anyone here emulate on the go?

Yeah... Bloodline and I both run UAE on our iPaq 4150 handhelds.  It works amazingly well.  There's still some bugs, for sure.  (no keyboard support, very poor sound, etc) but it's plenty good enough to run most AmigaDOS 1.3 style things, along with some small games.  A favorite of mine is Nuclear War.  :-)  Huge nostalgic portable fun on a very nice small screen.

DPaint actually works fine, as well.  You can't underestimate how cool it is to have a portable sketchpad with the power and ease of DPaint!  But it's a little difficult for me to use it with the way the mouse buttons were set up on the Amiga.  (I'm left handed so I hold the iPaq in my right hand and draw with my left...  The problem is, UAE runs a screen rotation that you can only set as right-handed, so the mouse buttons are on the left side -- difficult to hold down while I'm drawing with my left hand!)  I'm hoping they address this in the next version, as well.

I also run MAME on my iPaq.  Never know when I'm stuck somewhere for a few minutes and want to get in a game of PacMan or MrDo! :-)
