Anybody here seen my old friend SID?

I wonder...

1). Now that I have the X-surf, I see there are a lot of other ports on it. What else can I use this thing for? It looks very expandable.

2). My Cybervision has a position for a scandoubler, but, to use it on my A2000, I know it needs to be cut in some way to fit into the machine. Is it really worth all the effort (and money)? What benefits would it bring over just using the card alone?

3). I want to add a C=64 SID chip to my Delfina (mistake here, catweasel is what I really mean!), but I can't seem to find any, except for sometimes on centsible.com. (Can't use them, they don't answer the phone, and don't fill orders. Had to get PayPal to force a refund for me about a month ago. Avoid!)

4). Who is (was?) Fred Fish, and whatever happened to him? Back when I had my first Amiga (500), there was a huge library of Fred Fish disks, and one I remember in particular was Dan Aykroyd doing apiece called 'Fishhead'. Is that a real memory, or am I making things up? And where can I find those disks?

5). Other than my accelerator card, is there any other way to add more RAM to my machine? 16MB is cool, but I get the feeling that I could benefit from more, if I had some place to put it. (There's also always the option of getting an accelerator that can hold more).

6). Sometimes, right after I have to reboot because I screwed up something, the machine has drive activity, but no image on either monitor (VGA or CGA). I get the impression that even after power-down, at least for a few minutes, the Amiga is able to retain some settings, and if the machine is restarted too soon, the settings persist. Now, I've gotten into the habit of waiting at least five minutes, before I reboot to 'clear' these persistent, erroneous settings. Is this an actual phenomenon?

7). My Amiga came with an ancient Signalman modem, which I think is 300 baud. Are there still Amiga bulletin boards running out there, somewhere? I've seen a few BB systems for sale on eBay, and was just wondering if anyone snapped them up, and is still running one.

FFS (FastFileSystem) bitmap has been marked "changed" and the system must scan the whole filesystem to validate the bitmap. This can take from few minutes to tens, depending on the size of the filesystem. Fix: Use a better filesystem, for example PFS3 (commercial) or SFS (free).

Are there still Amiga bulletin boards running out there, somewhere?

There are some, but all I've heard of use telnet (internet) not call lines.

Back in the day, I added an extra SID chip to my Commodore 128D using the piggyback method.  I suppose I could dig it up and pull it out...lol, if you are that desparate.

3. The only way to add a SID to your Amiga is to install a Catweasel Mk. 3 and stuff a SID on that and as for where to find SIDs check this thread. Or pick up a C64 somewhere in your neighbourhood and rip it out of that.

5. How about this, can actually be bought here :-). I know there's also a Zorro 3 card which was exclusively a memory board taking 72 pin SIMMs, IIRC made by phase5. But I can't seem to find it again on the hardware databases :-?.

7. If you do a search on a.org you'll find that somebody started a Telnet BBS recently again. I'm sure there's still quite a few of those about. But actual phone line BBS'es? I doubt it.

You can get a DKB3128 zorro board and slap 128MB on that.

Edit: well, there's 128mb on mine, but it is in an A4000T. Not sure if it makes a difference putting a DKB on a 2000.

My mistake! (Aren't you glad I didn't say 'my bad'?). Anyway, I went and had a look at my docs for the Delfina and the catweasel, and it’s actually the latter one that can take a SID chip. I have an older one in my C=64, but I don't want to cannibalize it, and I think its not the version I need, anyway.

I typically avoid telnet these days, its not very secure, but I should be able to use ssh, to access a board, if I find one.

So, before, when I was rebooting too soon into the second boot up (after a change or a crash), I was actually interrupting the scanning process, and the Amiga had to start over.

Thanks, but, from what I can tell, it looks like its not for an A2000, w/ZII slots. Looks more like a A3000 solution.

That's a DMA SCSI controller though which takes 30 pin SIMMs it seems. I have no idea how fast the memory access would be. The memory card I was talking about was indeed the DKB one, not manufactured by phase5.

If you get the scandoubler for the CV64/3D, you will get the Amigas native chipset output doubled to 31.5 kHz (displayable with a normal VGA-monitor) through the same monitor-port as the CV64/3D card itself outputs graphics and it switches automatically between those two sources.

You are indeed right - you can't use Zorro3-only cards like the DKB3128 or the Phase5 Fastlane in the A2000. You could add 4MB extra 16-bit FastMem on a Zorro2 card, but it will be very slow. The maximum amount of memory you can add to a card on the Zorro2-bus is actually 8MB, but as your CV64/3D already uses 4MB of the 8MB Zorro2 address-space you cant add that much.

:oops: Ah mistake, I only noticed he had 16 meg ram. I presumed it was a maxed out A4000. For an A2k all Z3 solutions are indeed not usable.
