WinUAE CPU settings and 040.librarys
« on: February 23, 2003, 12:01:19 AM »
I have transfered the contents of my hd to my pc and got it working ( edited out those CPU60 commands from startup as i have an apollo060).
But i´m wondering, should i sett the cpu to 020+fpu or 040?
Which is faster?
And if i use 040, would i get any speed improvement with 040librarys?
Oxypatcher doubled the speed on my apollo... :-?

Never noticed any speed decrease using 040 or 020, but my amiga (before it died) had a 040 powerpc card in it so most software was using 040 versions so i  keep 040 in Winuae selected and they run very fast, i use the 040.lib what came with 3.5.

If your running WinUAE on a decent spec machine it should blow away the Apollo in terms of speed so oxypatcher and tools like that are not worth touching.

I recommend you get Amithlon it you want something that will make your apollo look slow.

thanks for the answer.
Unfortunately i only have a crap pc duron 900mhz 128mb integrated sound and graphics :-(
Still I get much faster graphic with p96driver than slow AGA on my A1200 :-)
I just realised that it probably would be best to do a clean install as almost everything is 060-optimized.

The new version of WinUAE should be fine on your x86 box, play about with testing different settings to set it to the fastest you can get it,

Need any help PM me.

If your setup is 060 optimized, use 68040 setting in WinUAE. There is very few 060 software that does not run on a 040 (I don't know any).

General rule for emulation is, the more complex the emulated processor, the slower is the emulation. Following this rule, 020 is better setting than 040. But there is no noticable speed difference between 020 and 040 when JIT is enabled.

Bye,
Thomas

I really can't understand the point of setting 040 in WinUAE; the fact is that the 020 has more instructions than the 040, yet selecting 040 shouldn't make any noticeable difference to the emulated CPU speed. Therefore, 020 should be the best CPU to select.

Also, even if you have 040 or 060 optimised apps installed, they should run the same speed regardless of WinUAE's CPU selection.
