Burning Kickstart Chip Eproms
« on: January 05, 2005, 03:32:25 AM »
Does anyone know if it is possible to burn an EPROM with a kickstart image? What chip/part numbers can be used?

Thanks

Mike

It's been many many years ago(like 10y maybe), but I remember an article describing the pinouts and differences of the amiga roms and standard eproms. It was possible to use standard eproms if an "adapter socket" was built and used along with a standard eprom. Some hotbot.com, google.com or aminet searching might find the old info. I used to make custom C64/128 proms the same way for me and a few friends. Kind of nice to have your computer boot screen display your own name/address/message when you turned it on. My memory isn't fantastic going back that far so please be kind if my info is faulty. And don't forget about the legal traps. I'm sure some one will be along to fill you in on the copyright issues. But I think if you're only interested in modifying your own system, you should be safe.

Yes, it is possible. I have used AMD and Intel 27C400's, although it is possible to use a pair of 27C200's for machines that require 2 Kickstart chips (IE 1200/3000/4000).

By the time you find a programmer, eraser, blank eproms, and learn how to split and or byte swap the files to get them to work correctly it's usually just easier to buy them. Not to mention the legal aspect.

Let us know what your desired end result is, perhaps we can help.  Is it a custom project?

Hey,
Maybe this should be noted...
The first 3 post to this thread all came from the US.
First time I've noticed that much posting in a row from
this side of the pond :-)

It is worth now not to use eproms, but FLASH chips instead. They must be 5v of course, you must also to do some adapter for them, but then you can rewrite them as many times as you want, and even switch kick's on-the-fly (if the chips were capacious enough and you made provision for commutating its high address pins).
