Workbench 4.0?
« on: January 05, 2005, 12:16:33 AM »
Just curious why "3.1" was still referred to "Workbench 3.1" but 3.5 and on are "Amiga OS 3.5, 3.9, 4.0".

Anyone know why?

Thanks,

Neofree

AmigaOS 3.1 and under were actually on a ROM chip, only workbench itself was on the disk. There are no ROMs for 3.5 and above. Since the OS was no longer wholly ROM based, people just got out of the habit of saying Workbench to describe AmigaOS.

Uhm, Workbench doesn't comprise the entire OS. It's only a bit of the OS. The OS consists of the ROM, DOS, Workbench and other assorted bits of code. This in turn is called AmigaOS release x. Or are you referring to what's shown in the WB titlebar?

AmigaOS name was invented later on 90s. Until 3.5 it was often called AmigaDOS or Workbench but Commodore never called it AmigaOS.

I believe Commodore planned to start calling the system AmigaOS but went bankrupt before it really happened. I have Commodore workbench manuals for "AmigaOS 3.1" but the previous 3.0 manuals are labelled Workbench /AmigaDos etc.
