Ramstein - Amerika?
« on: January 04, 2005, 04:25:48 PM »
Ok, what's the story here? I've seen the video a couple times. Seems to be a light hearted dig at the US, no problem right? Well not knowing german I do a websearch looking for english lyrics. A quick search doesn't provide it, but does give back tons of forum posts. Looking through the forum posts reveals lost of "yeah stick it to thse stupid americans, they are so gullible". Huh? People can't possibly be so brainwashed to think the moonwalk was fake? Or could they?

So anyhow, catchy tune & I really don't care much if they are making a dig at the US. I'm just curious of how it translates in German. Meanspirited or lighthearted?
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

It's not a very mean song. It makes more fun of the image that Europeans have of the U.S. than the U.S. itself. It's a kick in the nuts for the MTV-culture.

I agree with whabang, it's more a criticism towards the rest of the world mimicking the US culture. You have to keep in mind that Rammstein has a habit of making very ironic and satiric song. Amerika is not one of the better songs on the album if you ask me BTW. I especially like Moskau (in a very wrong Tatu-esque kinda way) and Amour. A very chart friendly and commercial album, nevertheless I still like it.

Rammstein: America.

We're all living in America,
America is marvelous.
We're all living in America,
America, America.

We're all living in America,
America is marvelous.
We're all living in America,
America, America.

If one dances, I want to lead,
Even if you turn you alone,
Leave to you little controlling,
I show you how it's done correctly.
We form a loving row (? not sure if Reigen translates as row..)
Freedom plays on all the violins,
Music comes from the White House,
And before Paris Mickey Mouse stands

We're all We're all
We're all living in America,
America is marvelous.
We're all living in America,
America, America.

I know steps, which are very usefull
And will protect you from making wrong steps
And who does not want to dance at the end,
Doesn't yet know that he must dance!
We form a loving row(?),
I will show you the way,
To Africa Santa Claus comes,
And before Paris Mickey Mouse stands.

We're all living in America,
America is marvelous.
We're all living in America,
America, America.
We're all living in America,
Coca Cola, Wonderbra,
We're all living in America,
America, America.

This is not a love song,
This is not a love song.
I don’t sing my mother’s tongue,
No, this is not a love song.

We're all living in America,
America is marvelous.
We're all living in America,
America, America.
We're all living in America,
Coca Cola, sometimes war,
We're all living in America,
America, America.

Translation partly by babelfish :-).

All in all pretty crappy lyrics.

If one is to go by the lyrics alone it seems pretty much solely US bashing, however if one takes the videoclip into account it seems to be more of a dig at the stupidity of the rest of the world for wanting/emulating US culture (IMHO ofcourse).

Cool, pretty much what I originally expected. The only reason i even asked was some stupid forum comments I read.

Even taking the lyrics at face value as a swipe at US culture, no problem. There's a time and a place for everything. Besides, if I hear one more time about American Idol, I'll rip my eyes out with a spork!

@Doobrey

AAARGH!  Make the pain stop! :-x

You never heard of a spork?? A SPORK is a combination spoon & fork with a rich and colorful history. It's quite commonly used nowadays by even fast food resturants. I remember in the 70's/80's growing up it was pretty unknown, only public school kitchens had them
