Frank Kelly Freas dead
« on: January 04, 2005, 03:58:52 PM »
Maybe you kids don't know who this is?
He was an artist who did alot of his early work for Mad Magazine and continued on to make wonderful and beautiful science fiction art.

plus, he was a real gentleman who I met a few times. I once showed him some props I had made for a film and generously complimented me.

He passed away on Sunday and my friends (in LA) attended his funeral monday.

He was a class act.

You're right, I never heard of him:-/

It's a shame though. It doesn't matter how good a person is, everyone has an expiration date :-(
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

I unfortunately never have heard of both these artists.
But it's sad to hear about the deaths of ppl who really have contributed.

OMG!!!!!   :-o  :-(

I had the privilege of working with him and his wife (Laura, I believe) back at WorldCon in San Francisco several years ago.  For those of you who do not know his name, he did the album cover for Queen that had the picture of a robot holding a person (Freddie Mercury) in his hand.  Kelly was also famous for several of his pictures published in magazines such as Analog and Astounding (just to name a few).

Kelly was a master of his generation of Sci-Fi artists (from the 50's to the 70's) and he was still working up until his death.  His loss is a sad day for every Sci-Fi fan that ever read the various publications of that era.

Kelly, I hope you got your wish.  Farewell my friend and thank you (and Laura) for the opportunity to work with you.
