Installing OS 3.9 in WinUAE
« on: January 04, 2005, 12:01:51 AM »
I've asked this before, but I forget how to, and my account randomly vanished, and all old posts seem to be gone? Did Amiga.org change Forums again?

Anyhow, what do I need to do to the start up sequence to WinUAE use my PC CD-ROM as an actual CD-ROM, capable of installing OS 3.9 without error?

check the box "enable PC harddrives" (or something similar) in the HardDisks section of the WinUAE configuration. Then your CD-ROM will be visible too.

You might want to check this page too, just in case more problems occur. :)

Good luck. :)

Ya I know that method, but it gives errors, it's like you need to actually MOUNT the drive. Will look at page.

Ok, I turned on uaescsi.device turned on log, got my device # which was 0. so I enter 0 and it adds a 5 when I hit OK. {bleep}s everything up. DUnno why it does it. Any clues?

I remember this being a LOT easier!

This is not the way I did it (I did right from scratch, the insert disk screen), but this is pretty easy.

If you have the workbench 3.1 adf's, get AIAB from aiab.emuunlim.com and install it.

Add a harddrive in WinUAE, format it and install os3.9 to there but booting off of aiab.

AIAB mounts the pc cd-rom with uaescsi so there's no prob ;)

You always have to press Tab or Enter to leave an input field on AmigaOS, otherwise the input might not be taken.

The 5 probably was hidden under the cursor. Because of lack of different colors you didn't see it. You should have moved the cursor one position to the right to check if the field is empty before you enter something.

Bye,
Thomas

I've had this problem before msyelf and drove myself nuts with it!

Here's now I solved it:

In the latest update of UAE I've checked the "UAEScsi" and "Create Logfile" checkboxes before starting the emulator.  Once it's started (and OS3.1 is installed on a "fresh" partition) then I close out of UAE after a successful boot and read the logfile.

It should show the device number of the CD ROM with the legend "UAESCSI = Unit 0" or similar.

Here's the hard part:

You then need to download / copy from OS3.9 CD ROM the CD file system.  Unzip (if loading) and place the install scripts on your UAE accessable drive somewhere.

Here's where my system went t#ts up.  Upon installing the CDFS, my install script would hang.  However, if you're lucky it will ask you which device number your CD ROM is.  Simply select the number that corresponds to your logfile and you're cooking with napalm...

If - like me - it goes wrong, you can do it the hard way by assigning the CD ROM as a PC drive accessable by UAE (and labelling the device AmigaOS3.9) and installing it that way, thus ensuring that the CD file system is installed.

Using Dopus (or similar), find the CD File system settings file in ENVARC: and open using a text editor.  You can change the device number here and hey presto! You have an accessable CD ROM drive.

whoa, I'm not sure what you just said but I'm running 3.1 and I would like WINUAE to treat my CDROM like a CDROM...so I can run CD32 games, etc...

How do you do that?

Got it, it was that 5, it was already there but buried behind the cursor. Amiga should do something about that.
