SkyOS
« on: January 03, 2005, 01:41:58 AM »
Earlier today, well now yesterday actually, I found out about a great alternative operating system called SkyOS.
To my knowledge SkyOS is NOT just another Linux distro, it is a completely different OS, and it runs on x86 hardware. At first I was very skeptical of its future and development until I realised many popular apps such as GAIM, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, as well as Abiword have been ported to the platform.

If Linux isnt for you but you are sick of Windows, take a look at SkyOS.
There is some more information on their website.

Here is a link to some screenshots also found on the site.

Yes it is impressive  :-)

Hmm.. already on version 5. I am surprised with myself that I have not heard of this OS until now.. maybe in a couple more years it could compete in the market?  :-?

I liked it better when it was free.. :/

But I can't help being impressed by Mr. Szeleney and the incredible speed at which he has cranked out OS parts and application ports during the year or so I've followed the development.

Which makes you wonder, really... Why can SkyOS develop at such a prodiguous rate when AmigaOS 4 has been in the making for how long now...?

For alternative OSes,

is a good start.

A cool site anyway.

be warned though - with their tools and apps you are likely to blast your Windows PC.

In three words: No Backward Compatability.  That's what is slowing down AmigaOS.  If they were free to write fresh code without having to worry about breaking the system-friendly applications and source code compatability with old source codes they could make it more POSIX compliant so it would be easier to port Linux code to it.

It is a real nice looking OS. Its advancing real fast too. I wish it was still free, but if they have the user support and they are willing to pay the $30 fee for use then I say go for it. I dont own a PC to try it other then VPC for my Macs, but it does look like a good way to get out of windows and try soething new. It reminds me a lot of BeOS back when it was strong. I would love to see this OS take off, but I feel its still just a toy and not of much use a a primary OS other then just for internet and email. If the speed keeps up it may just be something to look out for in a year or so.
