Should I get a Mediator instead of BVision?
« on: December 28, 2004, 08:46:36 PM »
Hey I got  a BlizzardPPC w/ BVision.  I need wireless ethernet.. It seems I can get a 90 degree PCMCIA adaptor since this is in a power tower, then get a PCMCIA *standard* ethernet adaptor and then get a wireless->wired bridge.  all in all this may be $100 or more...

so, should I do that above or should I just sell my BVision for enough to get a mediator, voodoo and cheap pci wireless ethernet adaptor?

thanks,

neofree

I would go with the option that places a VooDoo3 in your hands  :-)
it's more powerful and the other options (ethernet etc. ) make it all worth while!! 8-)

unless you are just going to get an A1 later any way

I don't think there are any drivers available for any of the PCI Wireless Ethernet cards, only for the PCMCIA cards based on the right Prism chipset.  So if you get a Mediator you're still stuck buying one of those wired to wireless bridges.

Not being particularly familiar with either the Permedia 2 (BVision) or Voodoo3 chipsets I can't speak to the actual 3d power of the two, but the BVision will definately give you better bandwidth from the processor/RAM to Video RAM than the Mediator + Voodoo will since with the Mediator all the data has to flow over the relatively slow Zorro bus first.

I wouldn't count on the G3/G4 cards.  They may indeed show up when OS 4 is complete, but at the moment they would appear to be nothing but vapor.  If they do come out, that would solve the bandwidth problem with the Voodoo card, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

well i wonder what's cheaper then.. how much is my bvision worth i wonder...   how big of issue is the bandwidth going to be?  i'm not a heavy gamer.  i might play decent 1 and 2 and free space...and many old games that dont even use newer hardware

Since you already have the BVision, just get a wireless PCMCIA card and be done with it.  For example the Netgear MA401 is about $20 on eBay (you'll still need to get the right angle adapter, but it's still less than $100 complete).
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

yeah but will it work through the case?  it's a two level house.  the amiga is upstairs and the wireless router is downstairs.  the amiga is maybe one room length away from being directly above the wireless router.

If you're worried about reception, you could always get a wireless card with one of the little adapters for an external antenna.  That way if the reception is poor you can always get an external antenna later.
