GVP A500 Impact Series II hard drive limit?
« on: December 23, 2004, 09:35:43 PM »
I just got myself a GVP Impact Series II controller. It came with a 200MB disk. This works. However when I plug in a 2 or 4 gb drive the scsi led comes on and the whole just freezes.
Checked Parity (both on and off) and checked ID number, both 0 and 1 don't work.
What could be the problem? Does the GVP not support these larger drives? How about an A590?

Ehr... Does anyone have any 4MB 30-pin SIMM's laying around?

I have an A500 with the same Controller here..
AFAIK you need the GURU-ROM for larger drives

And yes I have 1MB 30 Pin simms laying around..so you can get up to 4MB Fast Ram with them..
Tell me if you need them..no prob :-)

Hi,

try the Install-Disk with "Autoboot" turned off:
http://www.l8r.net/install/hard_drive_cont/gvp500hd8.dms

If Fastprep or Expertprep fail:

The disk contains a file (gvpscsi) in the Expansion-drawer
wich is a "gvpscsi.device" loaded by "BindDrivers"
So you can create a bootable disk including the Expansion-drawer,
Binddrivers and HDInstTools (for better configuration).

I've got a "GVP HD+8" Series II (gvpscsi.device 3.7), 8MB Fastram and OS3.1.
I use it with a 4,5GB Seagate (ST34572N).
Create some partitions with "HDInstTools" and be sure not
making them bigger than 2GB. :-D

Let's hope I do get the larger drive working without having to use the GURU rom. Even though they are free to download now I understood somewhere that you need a bit of circuitry to get it working..

Thank you very much for the offer, but the drive already has 4MB :) I am looking for 2 4MB modules to get it up to 8 :)

That is exactly the same type of drive I am trying to get to work! Thank you very much for the hints! You wouldn't happen to have a ADF file of your disk would you? That would be a great help as mine came without software.

*BLUSH* got it working.... The drives (Seagate) have a jumper block at the bottom. One of the jumpers is marked "Terminate Drive", which I switched on. But default these drives take termination power from the SCSI bus. After setting the jumper "Termination Power from Drive" it worked like a charm :)
Thanx for all hints!
