A1200 EZ-Tower & SD/FF
« on: February 20, 2003, 07:11:32 PM »
I have bought the DIY EZ-Tower Z4 and ScanMagic ScanDoubler/FlickerFixer from Eyetech.

Before I spend time and (well spent) money on a phone call, I would just like ask you lot for advice here.  I'll be phoning Eyetech tomorrow anyway, but I'd just like to get an idea before I phone them.  Here goes.

I have the A1200 and everything connected except the power.  I do not have the Z4 busboard so it tells me to do it this way:

> Connect the blue scotch lock connector to the -12 volts wire off an AT power connector.

I know which wire this is.

> Line up the blue wire that is not part of the power supply with the inside of the scotch
> lock (using the end which does not have the metal pin)

ok, so is this in the bottom of the connector or the top - I'm assuming that it doesn't matter though.

> Line up the  -12v wire of the AT power supply into the scotch lock, and the use pliers to squeeze
> the metal holder in place, and snap the cover over it.

I take it that they mean put the black wire (that you get with all the other bits) into the -12v connection and then put it into the scotch lock.  The scotch lock looks like it will chop part of these wire off.  Cud someone post a picture of what it's meant to look like or just give me a VERY detailed description.

This blue wire then connects to the middle pin of the A1200's power socket.  Is that it?  One wire going into the A1200 to power the mobo and accelerator?  Doesn't seem like much to me.

After all that it says you should remove the power connector which is connected to the floppy drive power connector.  What?  I must've missed something.  I don't have anything on the floppy power connector.  All I've got plugged in at that end is the LEDs.  I know that I don't need to remove the power connection because I don't have the Z4 busboard.  But what should be in there anyway?  The floppy is now powered by the AT supply now right?

Now onto question 2 (the last one you'll be glad to know ;-) )

The instructions are pretty simple for the ScanDoubler:

> Install the part with the socket on the chip labelled U4 ('Lisa')

Right, ok, simple enough.  (I pick up the SD/FF)  Wait a mo.  I have 2 empty sockets on the SD/FF.  One has nothing elso on it and connects to another socket (which has chips on the other side), this then leads to the monitor connector.  Now, which one goes on top of Lisa (most action she'll have seen for a while :-D ) and where does the other one connect to?

Cheers in advance for the replies.  I'm new to this kind of thing, but I've managed to do everything else myself quite easily, so I'm doing well so far :-)

Hi Vincent,

As to the DCE scanmagic, the socket with the chips
does go on top of Lisa. The second socket goes
on top of the Alice chip. The ends of the cable
connecting the two boards should face each other
(the main cable to the 15 pin (from Lisa) will point straight toward the back of the machine).

If your display turns out funny, it's likely that
one of the sockets isn't seated all of the way;
or that the socket for Alice isn't lined up
correctly (I did both wrong at first ;)).

      ##### - Connecter for VGA

      Lisa

      ##### - Connecter to ALICE socket

      Gayle

      ##### - Connector from LISA socket

      Alice

(basically, the glue blobs should face each other)

Cheers for that -D- :-D Have a :pint:

Before I can check it I need to get the power sorted.

If I could be bothered, I'd take the motherboard out of the case and use my old psu, but that's too much hard work (it took 4 hours to get this far!)

That was easy.  It took longer getting the side case off and on than it did to install the thing.  Although Alice was easyclicked into place right away, but Lisa was a bit stubborn, had to try t three times before it would sit on Lisa.

Again, cheers -D- :-D

Here's your cherry ;-)

They should have a thumbs up smiley for this........

Wayne....... :-D  ;-)

Thanks, Vincent! I love cherries! :-D

And good luck with that nice tower, that's probably my next step as well...as soon as
I find a better job. :)

What you need to do is get the wire with the pin on the end and put the end without the pin in the scotch lock (the side of the lock which is blocked at one end)

then connect the scotch lock to the -12v on the PSU power lead (one of the 2 blocks of 4 that normally plug into a motherboard) i think its the blue lead.

then run this out of the back of the case through the tiny hole that is next to the hole that exposes the center hole on the amigas power connector, and plug the pin on the lead in the center hole in the amiga power connecter.

then, get a 3 1/2" power connector from the psu and plug it into the floppy power connector on the amiga motherboard (you will actually be supplying power to the boarf through this instead of getting power from the board)

then connect another 3 1/2" floppy connector from the psu to you drive.

you can then switch on

believe me, it does work!

ill upload some pics in a short while

Cheers Droid!! :-D  You can have a  :pint: aswell.  But I think you'll have to fight -D- for the cherries :-P

Thank you very much for the photos, hope you didn't go to too much trouble for me.  If you did, I'll be owe you another :pint:

It's too late for me to do anything with my tower tonight (my other half's in bed and the tower is in the room next to where she is), but You can bet that after I've had my breakfast that's the first thing I'll try.

The wires on the Power that I've got have three (actually 6) black wires at one end, next to that is 2 (really 4) orange ones, and I can't remember what the other is, but I know it's not blue.  I checked which one was the -12v, but I've forgotten now.  Because I was unsure about the power, I just left it alone.  When I get started tomorrow, I'll check which one it is (I think it's one of the black ones).

I'm going to be REALLY carefull.  If something blows, I'll be without a Miggy for quite a while.  After spending money on the tower & SD/FF, and I'm getting a Blizzard accel soon, I'll have no money left.

Once I've got it sorted, I'll post here to let you guys know how it went.  If I don't post by 4pm (uk time) that means I've blown myself up  or my Miggy's died

If the latter happens, I'll be going cold turkey :-o  :-(    :nervous:  :pissed:    :boohoo:

Thank f*** for the 'back' button.  When I submitted it said the ususal Thank You, and when it loaded the page again  :-o  I was back at the news page, got to here as quick as poss and found my post wasn't here!

Luckily Netscape kept the message in the text box in the history buffer or I would have been well  :-x

I've saved those pix on my hd, so you don't need to keep them there just for me if you need to free up space or whatever :-D

Cheers, I might need it for the electric stuff later on.

This is the tower I've got, it looks better in reality, but you'll get the idea.  (The only thing I don't like about Eyetech is their website, but everything else is excellent)

I'll try and get a good photo later on. :-D

:-) I meant that I need a better job before I  can even afford a tower for my 1200. Room for a graphics card would really help me...everything is still so expensive for these things.  :-( Currently I have my Blizzard (w/fan), scandoubler and IDE splitter all packed into the desktop case.

Got another question.  (I can hear you now "here we go again" :-P )

It's a very simple question.

Which way does the floppy power connector (from the psu) connect to the motherboard, ie. what coloured wire is on the left?

This is the first time I've had the floppy out in a loooonngg time, and I can't remember which way the cable plugs in.  Knowing my luck, I'll put it in the wrong way and blow the motherboard. :-(

Hmmm...I'm not sure if they would be the
same (I don't see why they wouldn't),
but on the connector from my motherboard
to the floppy, the brown wire is on the far
left, while the red is on the far right.
