Upgrade 600HD or new 1200
« on: December 22, 2004, 06:20:54 PM »
Right now i got one Amiga 600HD and one Amiga 500.I have found a chip that gives the Amiga 600HD 1mb extra fast RAM (2mb total). It would cost me around 36,49USD.

Anyway, i have found one Amiga 1200 and a 1942 monitor for around 145,94USD. The problem is...

Right now i only use the Amiga 600HD for transfering ADF games to floppies.

1. Workbench is low as hell right know. How slow is it on Amiga 1200 without HD? (Workbench 3.1), and, how much does 1mb fast ram speed up the Amiga 600HD?

2. Is it possible to install a Graphic card in the Amiga 1200HD without changing the case to a tower case?

3. Is it hard to install a HD in the Amiga 1200?

4. Is it possible to use a more highres then on the Amiga 600 mode on the Amiga 1200 whithout flickering on the 1942 monitor?

omfg, my english sucks realy! Sorry for that, if you don't understand something...just ask. ;)

I'd go with the A1200.  Much faster (even stock) and much more expandibility.

1.  Any workbench from floppy will be slow to load.  It will be much easier to use on the A1200 because of the processor and additional memory.

2.  No.  Well, yes but you'd need a BlizzardPPC + BlizzardVision card which cost a lot, and run too hot in a desktop case.

3.  Yes.  Easier than in the A600.  Almost any 2.5" IDE laptop drive will work.  I'd suggest something in the 1-2GB range for a stock A1200.

4.  Not familliar with the 1942.

Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

if i was you i would go for an a1200,1-4gighd,1230 axx. card with 16-32mb ram and a cdrom. then you can play 99% of all the demos and games, get whdload also for the games then you can install them on the hd....

@SidVicious

First off the 1mb fast RAm your talking about for the A600, if its the kind that goes under the trapdoor of the A600, then its NOT Fast RAM.....its CHIP Ram (Graphics memory) which is good to get by the way............but if you want FAST Ram as well, then you have to buy 1mb, 2mb or 4 mb PCMCIA cards that go in the little slot on the left side of the A600. These are RARE!  but I have a 1mb one that I may be willing to sell for $16.00.  $145.94 USD for a 1942 is WAYYYYYYY too expensive.....I just sold mine recently for $26.00 USD although that was a bargain they really are worth about $70.00......the 1942 is a superb monitor.

As far as running Highres Interlaced without Flickering.....it is possible.......get:
MagicTV.lha from Aminet and you will see wonders :-)

Also you can get Visual Prefs and MUI and change the colors on the borders to make them flicker alot less!

But MagicTV is the easier solution for an A600 thats low on memory.

Yes you can install a GFX card on the A1200 internally and also on the A600....but external sort of............its called the Graffitti......its not really a GFX card but enhances Games and Mac emulation.

And NO, your english does not suck :-)

Oh, thx for the fast awnsers! =)
Ithere anyway to use a higher screen res without e scandubbler/flickerfixer and a VGA/SVGA monitor?
The work area in Workbench 2.05 feels too small. =(
I always runing thing in windows so they don't use the whole screen...right know i only have place for 3 CLI windows...and that isn't much.

With the A1200 and a 1942, you can use the screenmode DblNTSC:HiResNoFlicker, which is basically a scandoubled version of NTSC:HiResLaced. 640x400 resolution, with no flicker. You can only use it for system-friendly apps, though. Since it sounds like you're just using Workbench, that shouldn't be an issue. Both the 600 and 1200 are capable of the Super72 mode, (800x600) but you'll need a monitor capable of displaying 24KHz, and very few are.

Make sure the monitor comes with a 23->15pin VGA adaptor, otherwise you won't be able to hook it up to the Amiga.

Most Amiga dealers still sell hard drive mounting kits for the A1200. If you really wanted to, you could just swap the drive from the 600 to the 1200.

Yes!  Use Super High Res interlaced!  it will give you plently of space but will flicker like crazy............again.if possible use MagicTV (although I think it only works in 8 color mode or 16 color mode..............but SuperHighRes Interlaced only allows 4 colors max If I remember correctly.

its nice to have the 1942 for all this as the image is crisp and clear and has an anti glare screen unlike the 1084s
