Is This An Old Question?
« on: December 22, 2004, 11:19:18 AM »
Hi everybody. Quick question, which may have well been asked, and answered, many times here already. I just installed OS 3.9 over Workbench 3.1, with all the latest ROM updates. Funny thing is, my machine still boots into workbench 3.1, and seems to have now overt knowledge of the new OS sitting on it. I know my system has enough resources to run 3.9. I have a G-Force 030 accelerator, with 16 meg of RAM, and a Cybervision 64/3D. I also have a catweasel, a Delfina, a kickflash ROM (not being used yet), and a VARIO, a 4.6 gig SCSI drive, and external SCSI CD-ROM, and a 9 gig (SCSI) drive. AND I soldered in a new battery, after I removed the old leaky one. At first, I thought it was because I was running with the native graphics device, but, even when I boot to the Cybervision, I still get WB 3.1. I get the impression it may have something to do with my s:startup-sequence file, but I don't know quite what it could be. And also, I had great difficulty in trying to create an emergency boot floppy, which I think 3.9 wanted me to boot up with for the installation session. I kept getting disk errors, so I gave up on creating the boot floppy. Is that where I screwed up? Any ideas?

Hmm, not sure how to help on this one...

Did the installation run without hitch?  Did you select Workbench: as the default partition to install the OS on?

I hope I'm not being insulting to your intelligence/experience because you certainly don't sound like a newbie but it's all I can think of...

Try running the install again, but select the "Expert User" option and check the directories where the OS update is being installed.

Good luck

If you are speaking about the Information menu, without BB2 installed, is showed as 3.1 ROM.

Take a look at Kickstart and Workbench version too.

Welcome :-)

I don't mean to sound patronising or anything, but sometimes it's the obvious stuff that we all miss :-)

There's 2 parts to the installation.  There's a "PRE-Installation" then a reboot (back into 3.1), run the installer again and you'll be able to run the proper OS3.9 install after that.  Another reboot and you're in 3.9.

I think you only need to create an Emergency Boot Disk if you are installing on an empty drive.  You use the floppy to boot from then format/install from there.  But if you're installing over 3.1 then you just need to boot from the drive you want to install it to.

Thanks everybody, I actually am a 'newbie', sort of. My first computer was a C=64, then a A500. Like lots of people, I sort of wandered away from the Amiga and jumped on the PC bandwagon some years ago. A few months ago, I got nostalgic about the past, and got an A2000 on eBay, which I've been accumulating parts for, and repairing and upgrading. I not 'exactly' a newbie, in that, on the PC side of things, I repair, build, and program, and network my own (and everybody else's) PC's. I  currently have 12 PCs and two wireless devices on my network at home, and I host websites, and game servers. But, getting back to the Amiga, there's just a whole lot I either forgot, or never knew. Now, I assume that I should have installed into a certain directory? And also, what about this 'pre-install/re-install' thing? Thanks again for helping me out.
