Amiga.org Slashdotting?
« on: December 22, 2004, 02:59:16 AM »
Please, Please, Please excuse me if this was covered somewhere else.

Why was A.org down these past few days.  I searched Slashdot, and could find nothing that pointed here.  The only thing close was a NY Times article on Jeri Ellisworth.

?

From what I understand of the situation, this URL (or similar) was posted on the /. thread.

And if you find the picture of Jeri holding her car tag, you will see that the URL for that picture has amiga.org as the referring URL,  which is what supposedly generated all the traffic (as I understand it). So I guess you could say that AO was "/.'ed by proxy" (new catchphrase? :) the proxy, in this case being google images.

Excuse my ignorance, but who is she anyway? Is she the one that created the CommodoreOne or something? I notice that she's quite famous in that her picture is splattered across a number of websites and a google image search on her returns loads of results

I asked myself the same thing before I looked it up... :-)

It´s an expression for when a server has been recieving so much traffic that the server(s) can´t cope with the load, so they go down, or become unavaliable... Hence the term "slashdotted"...

Or something... :-)

It's a website / forum frequented by countless thousands of nerds. Whenever something gets posted on Slashdot that is in the interest of nerds, thousands-10s of thousands of nerd swoop down on the linked site with so much traffic, the site goes down under the weight.

/me envisions nerd gangs with pocket proctectors, high water pants, horn rimed galsses all snorting, drooling over Jeri's picture.

Actually, she's not bad looking at all is she? I thought I was the world's only attractive "nerd".

Ah well, I suppose I can live with there being two :-D

Err, you'd be number 3, I'd take blob over you any day :-D

This is why I've had to swap aros-max.co.uk over to an 'unlimited bandwidth' server, one link on a big site results in alot of traffic (though it's a smaller number of hits, larger files) - think in multiples of 20Gb!

Hmmm I was actually thinking more along the lines of me being number 1 and Jeri being number 2 - but there we go ;-)

It makes me laugh that so many users that frequent Amiga.org, a site dedicated to a computer only used by geeks and nerds these days to call users of /. nerds in a derogatory way!  Same on the other thread linked to on this page.
