Use AMPlifier from AmigaOS 3.9. Set the sound output to X-audio and the sound quality of MP3 will be a little better.

I tested it with an Amiga 1200 with 060 CPU.

What program are you using ? Are you using the 14bit driver?
You can also have up to 56khz if you're using a VGA screenmode (31khz), and this in combination with the 14bit thing. Sound is pretty much CD quality.
If you're using a non VGA screen mode you'll probably only be able to play'em at 22khz. These support up 28 or 27 khz if I remmeber... but you have to halve the frequency hence the 22khz. Even this is not that bad actually.

Ahh, and don't forget to use all that and calibrate it. It also makes a difference. These all together give very good sound. Amazing the stuff that has been pushed out of Paula isn't it? To calibrate the Paula driver use the Cybersound system available HERE

IIRC I think the Paula driver comes on the AHI package but I might be wrong. There were players that also supported 14bit directly but I know of only one that also plays MP3 and that's Songplayer. Other more recent ones (and also cooler with more features and better  looking, but more CPU intensive) also support all that stuff but through the AHI sound system.

The AHI home page can be found HERE

Don't overlook the calibration, it makes a noticeable difference IIRC. Good luck, and let us know if Paula rocks or not after all that :-D

You can install SPLAYER and playit with the mpega player, and you can use AHI for playit at 14bits (or try with amplifier) if you are running at 31khz splayer have a button for enable it at the quality is very high! paula is 4 channels of 8 bits but, with AHI/Paula HIFI Stereo++ 14 bits at 31khz monitor frequency is 2 channel of 16 bits =)

is a hack, but work fine =)

Try SongPlayer, I remember being "blöhn" away by the sound quality when I tried it a while back

(But seriously, it's very impressive for Paula)

I remember that Prayer2 was the player that gave me the best sound for Paula. It has built-in support for 14-bit and up to 48kHz sound (set it to 44100Hz).

AHI also supports 14-bit and is supported by all MP3-players that I know of, including AMPlifier, AmigaAMP and SongPlayer.
