A590 Power Supply Troubles
« on: December 12, 2004, 11:49:17 AM »
I have to repair a 590 unit of which the DIN Connector is wrecked. I have two options, either replace the DIN plug or make the A590 power from the Amiga.

Option 1. I can find pinouts for this baby, 5V, 12V, Ground they are all easy to find. However I also need the Sense cable. Here is the tricky thing, the beast has a 5 wired cable! Does anyone know what colour cable is which?

Option 2. A nice way of reducing the clutter of powersupplies, however I am pretty reluctant to draw power from the 86pin port. The 590 has a 7200rpm Seagate drive which does require a bit of steam! This would put strain on the A500 mainboard and ofcourse the power supply.

Any views?

Check out

Look under 'Ports and Pinouts' then Amiga Power Pinouts for a list.

Nope, that doesn't help. I need the pinouts for an A590.
Moreover, I need to know which colour cable is which, I know where I need to connect them, just not which colour is what!
As I said, 12v, 5v and ground can be found with a multimeter but then I still need the sense wire. And then I still have one cable left over. (4 pins + shielding and cable has 5 wires + shielding)

while i don't know the pin outs of the a590  i can tell you that most computer gear with a 5 pin power connector would have +12 -12 +5 and 2 ground lines you can find the -12 by reversing the probes on your multimeter (set on voltage) what i mean is putting the positive lead on the ground and the ground lead on the -12 you will get a positive 12 reading or if you don't reverse the leads of the meter that the meter will pull down past zero
but i don't know if this would work for you but what i did with gvp impact was to use my continuity meter to check the pins in the din to the pins on the hard drive power connector and found that they are all direct connected to the din all except the -12 so i took a PC power supply and cut off one of the molex connectors and replaced it with a female then connected it directly to the gvps molex minus the -12 (because on a molex its just has +12 +5 and 2 ground lines) and it seems to works fine even with out the -12

Thanx, I figured that much. However what's bothering me is I want to use the original power supply, but the Din pug on the cable is busted (heavily). But the power supply has a sense line which tells the supply to switch on when the amiga does. That means it will not switch on unless I have that sense line either connected to +5v or on the sense line in the a590.
I have 2 cables spare (I have 12v, 5v, ground and shielding taken care of) now I need to know which is which. One of them is probably the sense line and the other might be an alternative to the shielding or something. Inside the brick all 5 cables attach to the print in various places. That leaves me bothered with which one is which!
C= nicely labeled everything inside their miggy's, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING is mentioned on the brick's PCB. Bummer  :pissed:
