What should I get??
« on: December 06, 2004, 12:29:38 AM »
Christmas is so close now!

I'm looking for suggestions on what I should ask my family for.

A1200 setup?, A4000? A PC that can (really) run the OS 3.1 WinUAE setup I have. What do you all suggest I ask for? :-?

If you haven't got a PC already, then get that and run WINUAE. You'll benefit from all the other PC-related things that are difficult to do on a classic Amiga.
I couldn't do any of the raytracing, X-ray scanning, photo printing and encryption that I do now, on the Amiga. It is either because the appropriate software doesn't exist, or the speed of the Amiga is too slow.

@AmigaFreak

I would recommend a nice and white A1200 with an Apollo1260 in side !

A fast PC so you can run WinUAE!  That would get you the best of both worlds.

Whilst I concur with what the other posters have said (with regards to getting a PC), I really don't know what the hype is with WinUAE. I'd take a real Amiga over WinUAE anyday, but it all depends on your needs.

Depends what you want to use it for.

If you want to play the latest games, browse the internet, edit movies, burn DVD's etc and also run UAE for old Amiga software then get a PC.

If all you want to do is play Amiga games and use some old apps then get a A1200 with an internal HD and an 030 card - an A4000 is overkill :-)

If one has a 1GHz AMD PC with all the usual bells and whistles that boots into Amiga Forever, he just might have the equivalent of an A1. :-)

Well, it's certainly more powerfull in this way, but...you don't have the real thing! :-)

I just bought another A1200 with HD for simply playing my favorite games.
I also have a pc nowadays (for DVD burning stuff), but will not run UAE on it.

For our friend here, I also would suggest to buy a real Amiga. :-)

Bye,

Unless you really like the classic hardware, I think a new PC/WinUAE is a much more useful gift. Plus, "real" 50/60HZ screens are very hard on the eyes.

Well, if you really like the Amiga and AmigaOS4 is a thing you would like to use then a PPC machine wouldn't be that bad. Wether an old CyberstormPPC card or a new PPC machine is more difficult to answer. I suppose the added speed is cool with a Cyberstorm PPC in an A4000 even for those classic apps, all in the same machine with possibility of running AOS4 , but it's kind of expensive and newer PPC machines are much faster, so you decide. It's still probably less expensive than a new PPC machine. And you'll probably be able to sell it for the same price you bought it if you decide to upgrade. Beware that the CyberstormPPC could die I guess, because they're getting older and they seem to be sensitive cards or something.  I think a more sensible option would be to have a Classic machine like the A1200 with an 030 or 040 for that Classic felling and a new PPC machine ( now or wait a bit) for AOS4.
[EDIT] Ok there's MOS and Pegasus too to be completely imparcial, eventhough to say the truth things don't seem to be going well there.

PC isn't more poweful because you won't have OS4, and if OS4 takes off (like you all want it to) then you will be kicking yourself when youre skint and cant buy a machine that runs it

*real world ripples away to reveal dream sequence*

Twas merely weeks before Xmas:

Mum: "Did you get that super PC system for the boy?"

Dad: "Even better than that!"

Mum: "One of those A1 or Pegaos thingies?"

Dad: "I was just about to get one when I saw this!"

Mum: "Van Helsing on DVD? Oh my! The ultimate Christmas Gift! I had no idea you were planning this!"

Dad: "Yep. We can get the DVD player for his birthday..."
