Where to put the MUI key file?
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:20:22 PM »
Hi there,

Now that my A1200 is able so crawl the internet, I would like to know in which directory to put the MUI registration key. I have never been able to find out, but it now springs to mind as a good question.

Anyone can shed some light on it?

Regards,

Jettah

your question has been answered, but here“s a little hint for such problems : just start snoopdos, turn on monitoring and start the application you need information about.
in this way you can find out missing libs, location of files (ie. keyfiles), etc.

the answer is 42 Support  Distributed Amiga - moo ;)

@shlva

Oh boy, do I hate using SnoopDos! I've heard fantastic things about it in all its glory, but if I ever use it, my dear Amiga goes crasherdicrash!  :-?

So I quit using it. I give shelter to V3.0, V3.4, V3.7 & V3.8 of this nifty piece of software, but have no real liking for it at the moment.

Jettah

check if you have this line in your S:Startup-Sequence:

Path >NIL: RAM: C: SYS:Utilities SYS:Rexxc SYS:System S: SYS:Prefs SYS:WBStartup

To check if the S: is in the path (i doubt it) type in a Shell:

list S:

Bye

Hmm, that's nonsense. Path is only used to locate executables and scripts. 'list S:' doesn't check if S: in in path, either.

Here is how it works:

MUI uses various strategies to locate the key. First it checks KEYPATH and KEYFILES environment variables for the location. If no variable is found or the key can't be found from the specified location, it will try load the key from the following locations:

keypath:
keyfiles:
S:
L:
DEVS:
LIBS:

Hey, wait a moment, hang on!

Due to trying to use SnoopDos as suggested above, my dearest dear went crasherdicrash. As allways. Standard procedure.
The keyfile is in S:, and provides now a fully functioning MUI-settings control panel.

What a gig! Just had to reset the computer as of course MUI was already running and had not encountered the keyfile on its first activation. While SnoopDos just made the system crash (lovely WoopyDoopySnoopDos), it had to restart and now MUI found its keyfile. Simple!

Jeez, the sheer logic behind it. I dare say Amiga is femine! Mark my words!

Thanks to all for your response!

Jettah

Now what will be my next topic. Ehm, let me see...
