Finding ZIP chips
« on: November 24, 2004, 10:35:25 PM »
I'm trying to think of a way of getting hold of some ZIP chips. I have this Alfa Data HD for an A500 that can take ZIP chips for an extra 8 megs of ram, the trouble is finding zip chips to put in there.
So far the only way I could think of getting at ZIPs was to get them off some other board, possibly a case of desoldering them.
Any better ideas?

I think Mr. Hardware sells ZIP clones. They're expensive, though.

If that fails try a google search for Castle Computers. I am quite sure they will sell ZIP chips brand new as they are an Acorn dealer and some Acorn models use these chips.  :-)

@Scumble

We have these in stock at Computer City. If you like I can look up the price. It's the 4mbit version as also used in Amiga 3000.

Best regards,
Ron

That would be most helpful Ron, although they aren't 1MB ZIPs are they? I'm not sure if this is a problem or not, as I don't know how these things work on the expansion bus.

Re: HopperJF - It doesn't appear that castle sell ZIPs.

It's a bit tedious that I ended up with ZIP sockets - according to amiga-hardware.com some of the AlfaData IDE interfaces came with SIMM sockets.

I've also read somewhere that ZIPs weren't very good for some reason - high failure rate or something.

@Scumble

Right, these are 4mb's. You have the 500RX right? The 500RX takes both kinds, only you can't mix them. So, you could install up to 8MB of the 4mb ZIPs when you take out the 1mb ones.

Just to clarify, it's one of these units: http://www.amiga-hardware.com/alfapower.html

Also, I have no ZIPs installed.

I'm getting confised with the megabyte/megabit abbreviations. Are we actually talking 4 megabytes on the ZIP? Sorry if I seem dense, but theres a big difference!

@Scumble

Yes, that's the RX500. These Zip's are called 4 mbit, not mb.

8 of these ZIPs make for 4 MB Ram. We used to sell these sets for € 34,99 but I think we'll discount them for € 25 a set, if you're interested, or € 45 for 16 pieces (8 MB)

Cheers,
Ron

btw I think the RX500 is actually the Supra memory expansion, my mistake. But the ZIPs will fit in the AlfaPower controller. We used to sell a lot of these.

Not bad, but there is only room for 8 chips. An extra 4 meg is more than enough though. What about shipping to the UK?

@Scumble

Hmm only 8? That's weird.

Shipping to the UK is about € 5 if we use standard mail.

@JJ

The Oktagon takes ZIPs too, very likely the same type. Do  you ahve a manual so you can check?

Yes, the Oktagon does take ZIPs, the same type as the A2386 bridgeboard, so I think the same type as the A3000.

Only thing is the Oktagon is a Zorro-II card, so if you're using anything faster than a 14MHz 68000 or so, you're slowing your machine down...
