Optimum set up for WinUAE
« on: November 17, 2004, 02:12:38 PM »

I'm at work at the moment so working from memory but I've got my WinUAE set up as A1200 (expanded) with KS2 and WB3.4. with a 35 Meg HDD. However, I'm not sure if this is really 'right', for instance what KS and WB did the real A1200 actually ship with?

Since this is the emulation forum I'm hoping some of you come back with your 'ideal' set up?  What works/looks best? What essential things should I have on my HDD? A bit like some of the real amiga owners list their kit at the end of their posts....

I guess my problem is I don't actually know of any usergroups 'round here (I'm in Norwich in the U of K) so
that why I'm asking all these questions.

Thanks in advance.

Thank for that - I'll check my version of KS when I get home. However, I'm assuming any version of WB works fine and even the newer OS's??

You'll want to use at least the 3.0 ROM for WB3.1 to WB3.4, and 3.1 ROM for anything 3.5 and beyond. I'd use 3.1 for anything actually, it seems to be a lot more stable for me in winUAE. I also have a 1.3 config for a few games that just don't like the newer rom version or accelerators ;)

"Optimum" is pretty subjective. WinUAE should be configured based on your needs (e.g. playing games, programming, running LightWave 3D, creating a Catweasel disk factory, etc.).

The out-of-the-box configurations should be nominal for the platform selected, but if you plan on running RTG-friendly productivity applications, for example, you'll see a huge performance gain after enabling and using the Picasso96 and JIT features.

I realise that, but you don't miss anything "important" using the 3.0 ROM with OS 3.1. Especially not while using the emulator (yes, yes, I know some features are missing... but it still works fine, and I find it's even more stable to use ROM 3.0 and OS 3.1 in winUAE).

But... that being said, I normally use 3.1 ROM and 3.5 or a cross between Amiga in a Box and a few other doodads along with the 3.1 ROM.
