Are you abanding Amiga?
« on: November 16, 2004, 09:09:11 PM »
Hi!

I'm wondering a few things about the users of this site.

The users here seems to be using Amiga classics only
(A1000-A4000). That's all ok and cool but I wonder why you
don't buy a new A1?

I can understand that it's expensive and that some people
can't afford it but except for that?

It's like a new Amiga bought from Commodore. I got the same
feeling that I got when I bought my A4000D. If that tells
you people something.

No, I'm not hired to sell computer, nor am I against MOS if
someone thinks that. I'm just wondering why you don't take
the step.....???

I'd love an A1 with OS4 or even Linux, but I really can't afford it :-(

Its not just expensive, but right now its almost useless compared to similarly priced alternatives.

The operating system is a beta product, and until very recently, didnt even ship with the hardware.

The A1 isnt as complete as the classic amigas. I remember my A500+ boxed - it was a complete box; the software worked out of the box.

As much as I would love to support the community, I don't want to pay £800 to use IBrowse on PPC, with little support for games. One of my original reasons for getting my old amiga was its support for games, and this simply isnt present in the new Amiga1.

Not that any of the above matters, I simply dont have the money anyway.

Not for me. I would rather spend more than the price of an A1 or Pegasos on my A4000T. That's because I have a decent PC, and the classic Amiga has sentimental value for me. The spirit of it does not transpose onto the A1 or Pegasos (for me at least).

I am considering getting an A1, however I am sort of unsure if I really should. I mean, my other Amigas serve me well, however they are only hobby systems. If I purchase an A1, it would be yet another hobby system. I know that it would be faster than my PPC A4000 system by far, but....do I REALLY need it? Probably not. Would it be cool to own it? Sure. :-)

I guess when I think of purchasing an A1 system, I can also hear the voice of my girlfriend, in my head, asking: "Why do you need so many computers?".

Just tell her you're entitled to have as many computers as she has shades of nail polish  :-P

I'm following that path, my desk is now occupied with A500Tower, A4000Tower and 3.4 GHz laptop as I got a digital camera and broadband requiring some punch. But A1 is still a possibility (crazy me).

A1 is not an Amiga in my mind.   I think the last Amiga computers were sold about 10 years ago.

It's not a bad idea to use the Amiga OS and name, but it's slightly confusing to ask "why don't you buy a new Amiga?"

I seem to remember on another thread, any true "new Amigas" would have to come from Gateway as they own the technology.  Is that still ture?

@x-ray and argo:

Hehe, true.
But seriously though, I shouldn't buy more Amiga hardware as free space in my apartment is becoming very tight. I've got so much hardware sitting around that if I were to list it all for sale, you'd think that a dealer is going out of business. :-)

I can afford to buy either, but I dont want to invest in something that has little software.

Because it isn´t a real Amiga to me.
I rather spend my money on more classic hardware.
If I want a amigalike OS on generic hardware there is always AROS and you can´t beat the price of that. :-D

You took the words right out of my mouth. My classic Amiga 4000D just feels, looks, smells like the real thing and that takes me back to the "good old days"  :-D

I won't because it is not a classic amiga. My PC is suitable for all modern computing requirements I have and I see no need for an alternative cluttering up my desk.

Same goes for me...its a price vs. usefulness issue. "Do I really need this and what will I use it for if I get it?" Is what I always try to ask myself before a major purchase. I would love to support an Amiga company, but really can we trust any of them right now? Or even in the past couple of years? (I know there are a few that are honest and try hard, but the main players in control of the "Amiga" don't seem to me to be worthy) I have donated to AROS as I think it is the only real direction for the Amiga to go in. No one person at the helm, and no one target platform to buy for with all of the different ports. I would like to donate more, but I just got laid off unfortunately... (but with a little luck I will be going on to a slick new job soon!) I still have many classic Amigas for firing up old games with my brother and Dad sometimes. They are good for that and I don't need to spend the money on an A1 and then emulate a system that I already have in the garage. (Or in my brothers case, his A600 is on his desk next to his iBook and his PC)

Ultimately, I wish that AROS could draw in a larger audience and thus bring in more devs, get more of a word out about it, and with some solid community backing buy the rights to the Amiga name and any other IP they need / want and not have any of these shady characters involved with the Amiga anymore...ahhh keep dreaming Josh. Oh well. Time to play some Dead Or Alive Ultimate...
