Connecting Amiga to Win2k Machine with Samba... Confused!!
« on: February 15, 2003, 02:34:55 PM »
With a big thankyou to JurrasicCamper for helpingme with my network card, but now that I am on the network, does anyone have any experiance with networking up to Win2k Machine?

I can get to the machine but it asks for a password. I have used my login name and password for the windows machine, but it just keeps on asking for the password :-(

I am using Genesis (as supplied with OS3.9) as the TCP/IP stack.

Thanks for any help!

I'd advise using an FTP server on either machine as a much easier solution to maintain.  Windows filesharing services opens up 1001 security holes unless you know what you're doing.

Even using filesharing services securely between two Windows machines is a pain in the neck, let alone getting another operating system and additional software involved :-)

@mikey

Thanks for the idea, but the other machine isn't mine (tis my housemates, bascially it acts as an internet sharing server).

Samba will only be running as and when I need access to the servers files, otherwise it won't be running.

Jumpship, there's an excellent Samba setup guide on the Amiga at amigasamba.org. It is in an easy step by step format and I highly recommend it.

By the way, I think your problem here is in creating a Genesis pwd file - I had the same problem with Miami. Don't worry - go the URL above and all will become clear.

And try not to give up and use FTP - IMO it's far too limiting for transferring files across a LAN. I think Samba is the way to go.

@ Jumpship:

;-) One thing to watch for when running Samba over Genesis: make sure that Genesis is running as root instead of as user.  This is because one of the Samba demons (smbd) requires an effective user ID of zero in order to run.  Just alter Genesis' password file to move the root login to the top, and it will be run as the default.

This may be on 'http://www.amigasamba.org's help files now, but it wasn't there originally, as I recall.

As I recall, I had to configure the PC
and sign on to windows (after a reboot)
as 'pcguest'.

I made up a password to sign in with from the PC so I could give a password on my Amiga to sign
into the system with, for 'pcguest'. (Apparently the Samba software doesn't like not having a password.)

Hope this helps.

;-) In my experience, Samba requires no password to offer the Amiga's shares to the network.  Software used to read the PCs shares on the Amiga may require a login and password, depending on which flavor ot Windows you're running.  On my setup, SMBFS allows the login and password to be added as arguments to the command.  Thus, it can be written into a script and launched from a Workbench icon, or from a tools dock, as I do it.

;-) Also, the login and password don't have to be the same ones that Windows is logged in under; they just have to be a pair that Windows recognizes.

@jumpship

Put the Amiga online and start samba.
on the win2k box do the following

Goto my network places

Add network place

The add network place wizard will start.

Enter into the box........

\\192.168.0.1\all

replace the ip address above with manual IP address you gave assigned the amiga.

A network folder should then appear with

all on 192.168.0.1 written underneath it

Go to my computer

Tools/Map Network drive

Select a drive letter eg Z:

Browse for folder and select "all on 192.168.0.1"

The PC will now see the Amiga as Z:

Ram: on the amiga will be Z:\Ram

DH0: on the Amiga will be Z:\DH0

You can reconfigure samba using Administrator instead of pcguest.

Cheers
