Can anyone recommend a palmtop?
« on: November 16, 2004, 07:41:46 PM »
When I say palmtop, I mean w/ keyboard. Like the Psion 5, for example.

Basically, all I want it for is for writing. So anything with a keyboard that I can create text documents on would be sufficient.

The other factors I suppose I would be look at, is that it would ideally have long battery life, and it would be easy to store files and transfer them.

My housemate has a Psion 5MX, which is quite cool, but I don't necessarily need anything even that 'advanced'. The only other type of machine like this I have used is an HP Jornada something or other (I used one when working for a surveyors back in the late 90s, cost about £700 back then)

I'd be grateful for any suggestions :-)
I like Amigas

I would never be without my HP iPAQ 4150 (the next model up has a keyboard, but the handwriting recognition is so good I don't need one).

My screenshot again :-)

Something like the 4150 is probably overkill for what is being talked about here, but I have one, and can say it's a very nice machine, indeed.  And it's remarkably cool to put an Amiga into your shirt pocket.  :-)  So far, I've been quite happy with mine, despite some small annoyances associated with any device that flies that wavy 4-colored flag...

I know you said you were more concerned with function than spice...  But if you have to carry a device like this around with you all the time...  Why not have a little fun with while sitting in a waiting room or whatever?  You can't beat the power of the newer XScale WinMobile2003 devices.

For boring uses, a PalmOS machine is probably a little cheaper, easier, and better on the batteries.  But not by too much, anymore.  The handwriting recognition on WinMobile has gotten a lot better.  I haven't had a problem with battery life [unless running Wi-Fi], and I'm consistantly on the road for 12+ hour days when I'm out.  Granted its not on solid for those 12+ hours, but I've have it on for probably 4-5 hours a day and rarely drop it below half-charge.

And versions are available with built-in keyboard (though you might want to try one at a store first - I have the small detachable keyboard for mine, and it is basically useless junk - I would hope the built-in keyboard would be much better.)

For pocket applications, PocketWord, PocketExcel, PocketOutlook are fine.  The built-in contacts, tasks, calendar apps are fine, too.  I use "SecureWord.Mobile" to track my many contract-related administrator accounts and passwords.  It's been the best password-tracker of what I've found so far, and it's free. (As in beer, not GPL, but hey, good enough.)  :-)  I thought the built-in calculator app was crap, so I downloaded VTi and dumped the ROM from my old TI-85 graphing calculator to it.  Now I can emulate my TI (faster than original speed) from a handheld device less than half it's size.  :-)

So essentially, you can get a lot more from an XScale device, while giving up very little.

I saw something on TV earlier this year involving a full-sized keyboard that was projected by laser onto a table. It was a little gizmo that attaches to a plamtop. Did these ever come out?

Edit: I found the thing, but it is a little expensive

If you get a Pocket PC device with Bluetooth, ThinkOutside makes a great foldable wireless Bluetooth keyboard. There is also a great Word Processor for the Pocket PC from: SoftMaker.

How does UAE run games and such?

I have the feeling that a 400MHz XScale couldn't possibly be fast enough for fast emulation.... being as GHz PCs can just about handle it and the Pentium's a sure step above an ARM chip in speed...

I think the think that the one best meets what you want is a Psion 5MX.
The PocketPCs doesn´t have that formfactor anymore except for the Jornada which is both expensive and outdated by now. Not to mention battery life.
There is some new PocketPcs with 640x480 screens some even has USB-host so you could hook-up an external keyboard.
A Bluetooth-keyboard is another option if you want a real keyboard for PocketPCs.

I don´t like the built in recognizers in WinCE, I replaced it with this http://www.phatware.com/calligrapher/index.html
it´s simliar but better.

Of course the Newton Messagepad 2000 has the best handwriting recognition. If you can find one secondhand go for it, it´s the best PDA ever. There is keyboards for them to but I never needed one.
Apple did it right the first time, bring back the Newton!

WinUAE runs fine on the 133MHz PC's at work... And UAE runs fine on my iPAQ, about the same speed as an A500 (with choppy sound). This is using the first unoptimised beta of PocketUAE... so I expect it to get faster.

I can't wholeheartedly disagree enough with the idea that it's not fast. I have PocketUAE beta installed on my HP IPaq 2215 and it runs brilliantly for speed.

PocketUAE

As far as the original question goes, I am not a fan of the Palm because in it's current form, it's OS just isn't as functional. For those who made comments about handwriting recognition, I have owned a newton in the past and I think nothing right now beats Microsoft Transcriber (A free download) at pocketpc.com. Nor have I seen a comparable product to Microsoft Voice Command which lets you speak to your pocket pc.

Microsoft Transcriber

Besides that I haven't seen a word processor or spreadsheet on any PDA that equals SoftMaker's TextMaker or PlanMaker

TextMaker

PlanMaker

Then you probably had a Newton 100-130 or eMate, not a MP2000/2100 because I haven´t found anything that beats it.

Nah, Macintalk for Newton is way cooler. Instead of alarms it can read your meetings to you 8-)

the thing is WinCE is just that,  Windows but the NewtonOS was designed from the begining to be for a PDA. Newton is the PDA.

Oh, and Steve iJobs is evil :pissed:
